Re: vmware-server not working after kernel update

    vmware-server 1.0.4.1gutsy2 out of archive.canonical.com/partner
If I remember well in the past after an kernel-upgrade vmware refused to run. I had to start it in konsole and than there was a message I had to rerun the configure-script again (or something like that). After that everything was okay.
This time there was no message, nothing.
In this thread there are a lot of messages I've got while trying to fix it.
But again: for me it's not a big problem. But maybe for somebody else, so if you've got things I could try I'm happy to try them out.

Re: vmware-server not working after kernel update

From vmware-player (after a kernel update, one has to reconfigure the player):
Before running VMware Player for the first time, you need to configure it by
invoking the following command: "/usr/bin/vmware-config.pl". Do you want this
program to invoke the command for you now? [yes] NO
Do you have the same file for the server?
Windows no longer obstructs my view.

Ahhhhhhhhhhhh. Well, I don't know if this is your problem, but I can tell you there is a reason why I installed free VMware Player from the downloaded tarball. The one in the repos didn't work! :P

That was several version ago -- Feisty, maybe. But I kinda learned not to trust the packaged VMware in the repos.

]Yes. And that's the script (if I remember well) you have to rerun after a kernen upgrade. But not only I didn't get a message this time about rerunning it, the script is juist completely gone.
I removed vmware-server completely (really everything) and reinstalled, just to be sure nothing was corrupted or something like that: no config.pl
This were the messages I got:
          Code:
          /home/peter/Desktop/vmware-any-any-update117>sudo ./runme.pl
          Updating /usr/bin/vmware-config.pl ... corrupted
          Updating /usr/bin/vmware ... No patch needed/available
          Updating /usr/bin/vmnet-bridge ... No patch needed/available
          Updating /usr/lib/vmware-server/bin/vmware-vmx ... No patch needed/available
          Updating /usr/lib/vmware-server/bin-debug/vmware-vmx ... No patch needed/available
VMware modules in "/usr/lib/vmware-server/modules/source" has been updated.

Before running VMware for the first time after update, you need to configure it
for your running kernel by invoking the following command:
"/usr/bin/vmware-config.pl". Do you want this script to invoke the command for
          you now? [yes]

          sh: /usr/bin/vmware-config.pl: not found
Besides what's written in this thread I tried a link to another version of some lib. No result. Copied the lib. No result. Etc.
          But I'm not really a Linux-guru...

Oops, RSI-break came in between, missed last post.
vmware-server out of the repos did work. I'm absolutely sure, because I've been running it for quite some time now.

Re: vmware-server not working after kernel update

So maybe, as dibl pointed out, installing VMWare packages from the repo's isn't the way to go. Hmm. I too, downloaded and installed the VMWare Player from their website.

If you open a console and search for the file, can it be found anywhere?
            Code:
            cd / && sudo find -name wmware-config.pl

              No, it's just isn't there.
In the past I couldn't get vmware-player to run (dont' remember why). I installend vmware-server from the site, because vmware-player in the repos didn't work. But some time vmware-server showed up in the repos, and that did work. And I'm really absolutely sure, because actually at this very moment it's running because I'm testing a site on that lovely Windows. But I'm running with the 14 kernel now.

[off-topic]I don't only test sites on it. I run antivirus, antispyware, register-cleaners, defragmentation, firewall, fight with update-terror, etc. I really really really miss Windows[/off-topic]

Re: vmware-server not working after kernel update

There are two other scripts: /usr/bin/vmware-config-network.pl and /usr/vin/vmware-mount.pl
But I'm afraid to run them, because with the old kernel it's working fine and I really need Windows to test. And I don't know if there's any use in running them.
But if you think I should try one of those I'll try them.

Re: vmware-server not working after kernel update

Earlier in this thread you said you reinstalled vmware server. But the kernel modules for vmware server for the new linux kernel have to be rebuilt. In vmware player that's what the /usr/bin/vmware-config.pl file does. I'm going to step out on a limb here and suggest that in your case, running vmware server, you need to do the same, but with the /usr/bin/vmware-config-network.pl file.

I've first run it (with the 15 kernel) without running the script. Gives me this in konsole:
                      Code:
/usr/lib/vmware-server/bin/vmware: /usr/lib/vmware-server/lib/libpng12.so.0/libpng12.so.0: no version information available (required by /usr/lib/libcairo.so.2)
kde-config: /usr/lib/vmware-server/lib/libpng12.so.0/libpng12.so.0: no version information available (required by /usr/lib/libqt-mt.so.3)
kde-config: /usr/lib/vmware-server/lib/libpng12.so.0/libpng12.so.0: no version information available (required by /usr/lib/libqt-mt.so.3)
Than I ran the script, and it gives met this:

                      Code:
                      /home/peter>sudo /usr/bin/vmware-config-network.pl

It's your system, so you have to decide. But if it was me, I'd rerun the script, and this time when prompted with:
Would you like to skip networking setup and keep your old settings as they are?
                        (yes/no) [yes]
I'd answer 'no' and go through the process of rebuilding network support.

Yes. I just tried it out. And in a short time I'm going to upgrade so...
Actually one thing changed, but I don't know if it has something to do with this script. I run Windows 98 and XP. 98 for Internet Explorer 6, because not everything is working with IE on Linux.
It took about five minutes before there was an internet connection in 98, now it works like XP: right away.
So it wasl not all for nothing
