    monitor resolution not remembered.

    Hello,

On the eve of Hardy I bought myself this gorgeous samsung syncmaster monitor which runs on 1680x1050. Games now look like you're in the amusement arcade.

I plugged it in, decided not to run 'sudo dpkg reconfigure xserver' but see what kde does, well it just started up the new monitor in my previous resolution of 1280x980. So far so good.

Then I tried setting the new resolution 1680x1050 through 'sudo nvidia-settings' and by manually changing the xorg.conf file, but ... everytime I restart x, it reverts back to 1280x960.

It almost seems like something from xorg 7 of not storing things in xorg.conf anymore, which I regard with a frown, but that aside.

Where is this setting stored? I mean I could probably try 'sudo dpkg reconfigure xserver' yet, but I'd rather know what's going on and what is stored where.

    Thank you.

    It's all in xorg.conf, AFAIK.

I would do Alt-F2 "kdesudo nvidia-settings" and then on the panel click "detect displays". It may have to do with the dpmi interface to the new monitor or something like that.

Then after you "detect displays", set your resolution to 1680x1050 on that same panel, and then click the "save to X configuration file" button on the lower right of that panel. Make sure the "merge" checkbox is X'd, and "save" it, and it should overwrite xorg.conf with the new settings. Ctrl-Alt-Backspace to find out for sure.

      Good day dibl.

All I see in my xorg.conf is 1680x1050, and nowhere 1280x960

Still followed your instructions to the letter, same result, kde starts with the old resolution, and it's nowhere listed in xorg.conf.

Hmmmmmmmm. Did you ever set the resolution in that KMenu>System Settings>Monitor & Display utility? Maybe that's overriding the xorg.conf "screen" section?

Here's another longish shot, that may not be worth the price: If you rename your hidden .kde folder in your /home/Jean directory, then restart the X server and THEN run the nvidia-settings utility as Super User, maybe the resolution will be reset as you want it in the new .kde folder. You will, of course, lose all custom desktop settings in this process.

        I dunno, kinda semi-educated guessing, really. :P

No, I have always used the nvidia thingie.
But I just tried it. It put some 15 'modelines' with all kinds of resulotions into xorg.cong but 1680x1050 was not in there, it didn't look to close but it looked like there were no wide screen resolutions among them. Then upon x restart I had some strange 800xsomething resolution and strange behaviour from the keyboard. I saved that xorg.conf and I'm gonna scrutinize that tomorrow.

Dibl, you're priceless in all your efforts of helping out. Thanks for now and I'll get back with results.

            Thanks!

One final thought -- are your certain 1680 x 1050 is a resolution that your Nvidia card supports?

Your suggestion of renaming .kde worked dibl, I did not even have to fire up nvidia-settings, monitor would come right back up at 1680x1050.

You can chalk up one more dibl. Thanks.
