High CPU Load and choppy when playing video

    my system specs are:

    P4 3Ghz

    1GB RAM

    160GB Segate Baracuda SATA

    ATI HD 2600 PRO 512MB

i have went through configuration hell getting proper drivers setup for my video card and getting S video out to work simultaneously with standard VGA out.. see i have over 150GB of DVD rips and i watch them all off my computer on my TV with a SVideo cable (the box is dualbooted with windows aswell and it works good there) but im pissed at windows because it has a **** load of corupted system files.. it blackes out for a bout 15 mins before it will go into windows. and i dont have a cd to restore it.. and i'd much rather only use windows when i want to play games.. but this is a big deal not being able to play my movies smoothly and still be able to browse the web etc etc. at dead idel with only VLC running playing the video the video has a constant chop in it.. it will run smooth for about 5 sec then chop and repeat with vlc running both Xorg and VLC use a adverage of 40% cpu this leaves me with somewhere between 15% and 0% idle also my load adverages are between 2.00 and 3.00 while playing a video a further note is i have compiz running.. with fusion. but i dont use the cube while playing a movie because it will spin my movie arround.. but that feature is a nessassory part of my multitasking enviorment.. i love Unix/Linux and i really like the Ubuntu Line being based on Debian but why cant it seme to do something so simple as to play a video for me.. i can post my xorg.conf if nessessory but im posting this on my laptop at the moment due to high load from the video playing

Thanks any help will be much appreciated

This is almost certainly the main "competitor" to your movie. You can prove it by opening a console window and entering
    Code:
    top
and then watching a movie while you watch the list of processes and the resource consumption.

You probably are getting everything you can get out of that ATI card. I think you'll have to shut down Compiz to get better performance on movies.

Here's a little information that might help just a little:

do you think the outlines in that link will fix my problem with compiz running? i may do it anyway if indeed it will improve performance.. however if i must shut down compiz while watching a movie how difficult would it be to make a start and stop script that could be easily execuited when i want to start/stop compiz

        Hi,

If you do 'sudo apt-get install fusion-icon' you'll get an icon in your tray through which you can switch between compiz and the normal window manager.
It also remembers your choice and starts that window manager when you boot into kde.

Out of interest, what codec have you used for your videos?

i have shutdown compiz and the VLC still chops and uses 40-80% of my cpu and when i load web pages it makes it chop worse until the page loads i dident expect this from linux windoes plays a movie and runs 20+ websites at the same time also they are in xvid i think.. not super sure but i think they are xvid

I've had the same problem with xvid on VLC, and so I don't use it anymore. I use Kmplayer with the Xine engine and have had no chopping, skipping, or hopping since. I also use Kaffeine with the Xine engine, but I like Kmplayer/Xine much better. YMMV.

Concur. Mplayer has always worked for me. I have switched to others only to return to mplayer.
