Trouble with DNS lookups on intranet - New linux user

Hello all. Please forgive me if this has been answered elsewhere - I've been googling for 2 hours now and have had no luck in finding an answer.

I have 5 new linux machines running fresh installs of Kubuntu 7.10. They grabbed network addresses through DHCP and can connect to the internet.

But they can't resolve anything in my Intranet. I have two servers running Windows 2003 DNS as my 1st and 2nd machines. The resolv.conf file shows the addresses correctly. But any lookups to a host on my intranet fails.

Pinging an internal host by name shows that the DNS lookup isn't succeeding. I can make things work if I add the relevant names to the hosts file, but this seems silly. I should be able to use DNS for this. Does anyone have any suggestions?

    Thank you for your time.

Which internal hosts are you pinging? The other Kubuntu boxes? Windows machines?

Windows machines are usually set to register themselves in DNS automatically, but I don't know if that's the default behavior for Linux.

My internal webserver, mainly. Also tried the DNS servers by name. Perhaps it is something with 192.168.x.x addresses? That doesn't make sense, but I'm not really having any flashes of insight ...

        That's really weird.

Are you sure there is an A record on the DNS server for your webserver?

Yup. All of my other computers (mix of Windows and Apple) have no trouble to get to the webserver.

Why don't you download WireShark, start a capture and then ping some internal hosts by name.

You could also check the DNS logs of the Windoze servers, but I'm not sure how detailed they will be.
