    KNetworkManager Wireless Router Login Problem

I'm running a Linksys router in my home. I'm using WEP encryption. I can't get KNetworkManager to accept the password to connect to this router. My laptop, running Windows XP has no problem connecting. I can't get my desktop unit to connect running Kubuntu (if I boot to Windows ME, on the same machine, I can log in as usual).

    Does anyone have a suggestion?

Re: KNetworkManager Wireless Router Login Problem

I'm also having trouble getting KNetworkManager to get past step 2 of its little connection routine. I don't know if the underlying cause is the same as yours but since no one's replied, I might add my story here, too.

    7.10 Gutsy
    Netgear wg111v2
3 different wireless routers on three different networks, all WEP, all the same key, all incapable of being handled by KNM.
All 3 work on same comp with same adapter in XP, and SOMETIMES at linux terminal using iwconfig then dhclient. (In a previous kubuntu these same routers (with same WEP keys) worked just fine from KNM.)
The exact manner of (K)NM's death varies depending on which WEP key type I tell it I'm giving it.

Sometimes (this one I know I can reproduce): The gear icon spins and spins, the progress bar in the bubble won't proceed past step 2 of its sequence (I forget what it calls it). I find NetworkManager (no 'K') with 60-95% system cpu use. It only ends when I kill -9 it. (The attached syslog entries go from adapter insertion all the way through -- lots of mention of wpa_supplicant you notice, but I don't know why it's even involved)

On another occasion: KNetworkManager crashed, with the standard backtrace thingy-- second attachment.

Yet another: KNM doesn't give any error. The gear is just silently replaced with the disconnected wire-outlet icon. I mouse over it and it says "NetworkManager is not running".

Doesn't matter whether I tell KNM its a "passphrase" or hex key. Neither one works-- I just get a different kind of death.

Any help would be greatly appreciated! Any other output or info I can supply, just say the word. Thanks.

Re: KNetworkManager Wireless Router Login Problem

Hi NessHMC. I had the same problem as you. 1st thing I did was to update my firmware in my router from a wired computer. (Never update firmware from wireless.) Is your wireless card recognized by Kubuntu 7.10? Drivers installed etc.? If so, I tried my password and that did not work so I had to use the hexadecimal for my password and it worked!!! I must have tried my password 100 times but to no avail until the hexadecimal (26 character one) was put in. Don't know if this will help but I hope so. Good Luck.

Hi I have had the same issue with my laptop, and it did not matter what distro I used (Freespire,Linspire, Kubuntu). I now use WPA for my router security. I am able to connect every time, but I have to password the connection every time. My windows machine done not need to password this connection only the first time I connected.

Noel, you can use kdewallet to store your password.

You are correct but how do I get the wallet to run with out a password for the wallet?
I have a wallet password and have to add that every time i boot up.

What you are asking for is doable, but why? If you set kwallet without an access password, then anyone who has access to your PC and starts/runs applications that require password access will be given that access. Is that what you want?

If you like, you can set the kwallet password as blank...

                  Uhh... could we refocus here?

FYI, changing the encryption and/or key are not options as I don't control them (it's a rooming house). Besides, that'd be a work-around--not a solution--to a presumable bug in software that's been around through several versions. :-p

Did anybody try the "update firmware" solution?

Try Wicd instead of Knetwork Mangaer.

I've had the same problem with my Linksys router. Rebooting the router solved the problem for me. Reboot the router by removing the power cord, let it sit for a minute or so, then plug it back in with your computer on and booted up. After that it worked fine. I sometimes have problems connecting to routers at wifi hot spots, and of course this solution does not work there.

Thanks for the reply. I do not care who has access to my laptop as it is my home laptop, and my kids are 3, and 4. Also my wife dose not care for linux so I get the laptop all to my self.
