firefox (and thunderbird) as default app

In kubuntu gutsy, I use both firefox and thunderbird. But I can't get them to open as default web/email clients. I have set them as default applications in system settings, ("in the following browser: firefox "%u""), but nothing happens with I click a link. Same problem with thunderbird and email links. Any ideas?

For Fireox, open Konqueror and click on Settings | Configure Konqueror | File Associations and then under Known Types click the + sign on inode and then on directory. Under Application Preference Order click on Firefox and then the Move Up to place it at the top of the list. Click on Apply and OK and your set.
