Digital Video Cam

I have a Sony DCR-HC26 camera. My system will not recognize the USB connection. Do I need special software?

Have you seen http://ubuntuforums.org/archive/index.php/t-454266.html ? It suggests the camera connects to Kino by Firewire, but not USB...
