    kinit : No resume image

I have a Core2 Duo system with Nvidia GTS 8600 graphics
card, running Kubuntu 7.10. I installed latest NVidia proprietary
graphics drivers, and then Compiz and Emerald. After
considerable tweaking, it's working, except on boot
    I get:

kinit : No resume image, doing normal boot ....

then I have to login to a shell, and use startx in the shell to
    get the graphical interface going.

Also, curiously, now when I hit logout on the K menu, the
only choice given is to logout - no shutdown or reboot options.

    Ideas to fix this appreciated.

ttbomk, the kinit message you quote has nothing to do with X.
all it's saying is that it's not found any image to resume operations from.
the resume image normally is in the swap partition and it's written there when hibernating.
    reckon your problem is elsewhere.

there was (is?) an issue whit those options and xgl.
not sure whether or not this applies to your case.

    as for kde, it's here:
Kmenu -> System Settings -> Advanced -> Session Manager -> Offer shutdown options (under General)
Kmenu -> System Settings -> Advanced -> Login Manager -> Shutdown -> Allow shutdown -> Local -> Everybody

On the boot problem, it may be choking on the splash image. Try adding a "vga=791" option on the kernel boot line -- that's what my 8800GTS needs.

Re: kinit : No resume image

I was able to fix my "No resume image" problem by deleting the .X0-lock (that's a capital X and number 0) file. I think it was in /etc/X11.
