    Kubuntu 7.10 firewall

    Hey,

does anybody know if Kubuntu 7.10 comes with a firewall and if so where can it be accessed ?
(E.g with Mepis 6.5 its under Guarddog )

Need to know if a firewall is blocking Krdc ( aka a Tight VNC-clone ), since I always get following message on connecting:
****connecting failure, no server running at the given address and port*****

    Thanks for any help.

A packaged firewall isn't installed 'by default.' *ubuntu uses iptables:
    DESCRIPTION
Iptables is used to set up, maintain, and inspect the tables of IP
packet filter rules in the Linux kernel. Several different tables may
be defined. Each table contains a number of built-in chains and may
    also contain user-defined chains.

Each chain is a list of rules which can match a set of packets. Each
rule specifies what to do with a packet that matches. This is called a
‘target’, which may be a jump to a user-defined chain in the same ta‐
    ble.
In a console, man iptables for more information.

The ****connecting failure, no server running at the given address and port***** certainly sounds more like an incorrect ip/port address or that in fact, the server at the ip/port isn't running (as the message states).
Windows no longer obstructs my view.

Snowhog is right, the iptables firewall by default doesn't block Krfb/Krdc.

Guarddog is in the repositories and is a nice and easy way to control IPTables.

But when the server isn't running in the first place...

To answer your question - yes, Kubuntu comes with a firewall called iptables. However, there are no rules defined. If you want to setup a software firewall, best to use Guarddog or Firestarter as a GUI frontend to iptables.

If you have a DSL modem ( as I do ) or a cable modem, you can configure the ports with your ISP. So if you did not setup a software firewall and you think some of your ports are blocked, check with your ISP/router is what I would suggest. Or go to www.grc.com and run ShieldsUp to test your ports.
