How do I modify Kubuntu so that when I plug in my headphones, it recognizes it and plays music / audio through the headphones rather than the speakers?

Your question is strange. usually, you connect one device to the output of your sound card / motherboard - be it speakers or headphones, only one device can work. although this is not true in all cases. i own a dell computer and i have two outputs - one at the back to which i connect my speakers, and another output and the front of the case to which i usually connect my headphones. in that case the front jack automatically overrides the back output thus "muting" the speakers.

if you have two outputs try connecting your speakers to the back and the headphones to the front and see if it overrides the speakers. if not, then i guess you'll have to disconnect or turn off your speakers when you listen through your headphones.

      Re: Headphones

The speakers are built into the laptop. Right now I've got the headphones plugged into the front and Kubuntu is just ignoring their existence. And there is no option in KMix to change it to headphones.

This won't be much help, but I have a similar problem. I have a Dell laptop on a docking station - sound USED to come from my speakers plugged into the dock (lost track of when it stopped), but now the sounds comes from either my built-in speakers or the headset jack.

So it would appear that the dock sound jack is treated as another device by Kubuntu. Any tools to find out if it is? Would it be a pci device?

          Re: Headphones

There were some issues that I recall reading about when I got my laptop. I did not experience the issue however some others did.

What sound card do you have? Can you post the output of 'lspci'?

          Code:

            Re: Headphones

Here's the 'lspci' output (sorry, I'm not too familiar with the posting widgets like 'code'). I also noticed that 'alsamixer' lists my card as a SigmTel STAC9200, which is probably just the chipset on the Intel card.

              http://linux.dell.com/wiki/index.php...dd-on_Packages

From here the linux-backports-modules is listed. I know this fixed alsa issues for some. Check adept to see if you have it installed. If not, install it from adept and check if it clears the issue. Note: You will have to restart the laptop after installing the package.

space: You have the same audio controller as I have on my laptop. I had to compile alsa ver 1.15 to get sound to work at all for me. The next question I have is what is the make of your laptop? That will determine which alsa modules to set.

There are several linux-backports packages available. Which one should I use? -generic, -386 or some other?

I have a Dell Latitude D820 with an Intel processor.

                      Re: Headphones - SOLVED

Ok, I've been all over several boards to find an answer to this problem and finally got it to work. What started out as not having sound on my docking station headphone jack, resulted in making the following changes:

1 - installed the generic version of linux-backports-modules (found on Ubuntu board)
[link: can't remember where I found it]

2 - set the snd-hda-intel as default with the following commands: (found on alsa-user board)
sudo rmmod snd-hda-intel (need to kill all sound first - disable sound system; quit kmix)
                      sudo modprobe snd-hda-intel model=ref
                      [link: http://sourceforge.net/mailarchive/m...ail.gmail.com]

3 - enable ICE958 button on the Switches tab of kmix (found on Ubuntu board)
[this is not the link I used, but might be helpful: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.p...ll+dock+sound]

                      4 - restart sound system

I'm not sure I had to reboot after steps 1 and 2 (old windoze habit), but I did anyway. I'm not sure step 1 or 2 was even necessary, but since it works, I'm not going back to find out.
