I've used kubuntu for a year now, and each time I try compiz (hoping its better) I lose the top rite corner functions i.e the ability to minimize and full screen or close. What is it about compiz that make those disappear?

You have a problem with the "window decorator".

Compiz works best with Emerald, but it can also (usually) use metacity. Kwin never works for me with Compiz.

So, you need to get Emerald working correctly with it, so you won't lose your window borders.

Assuming you have glx working right (i.e. you can run glxgears and get the graphic), then mark the Emerald package for installation, then open a Konsole window and try

emerald --replace

and see what happens. Even if nothing obvious happens, just leave that konsole window open (or minimize it) and open another konsole window and enter

compiz --replace

and see if compiz starts with window borders working.

Dat didit, My forever thanks. Didnt work until after reboot. Then voila 1st compiz working in Kubuntu for me!
