Try to keep a long story short here...Ive been running Kubuntu for well over a year now, and have no complaints nor have I run into any major issues before (untill now). I was tackling a bug I've known about with my particular setup to get hibernate mode working (suspend mode worked fine). I was in the process of setting up uswsusp when I had to step away from the computer. It suspended (not using uswsusp) and when it woke up it crashed - extremely hard. That is the first time in an extremely long time since I've seen this computer crash. The only thing I could do was power it down (I tried other methods first), and ended up corrupting my HD... Well, I've been going over the file in lost & found and got most fies back into place, but right now I'm not able to log into the desktop environment (KDE can't start it's services - somthing wrong with iceauth). I have a feeling I might need to reinstall, and am wondering if I can limit this to KDE?

Having a separate partition for /home is always a good idea, since it lets you reinstall your system without losing valuable personal data.
Do you get graphical log in screen ? Or do you get text log in screen ?right now I'm not able to log into the desktop environment

- rename kde folder -> KDE builds new folder with default settings.
If you can login in the text mode, you can use cli tools to remove/install/reinstall packages. KDE is one of the packages. BUT you need to know what is wrong.I have a feeling I might need to reinstall, and am wondering if I can limit this to KDE?Before you edit, BACKUP !

I get the graphical login screen, but when I login using that, it stops on the initialization screen, takes 2 minutes and then displays a message the KDE can't initialize the .iceauth file, followed by a dialog box (only option being "okay") at me saying that the kmserver couldn't start, please reinstall KDE. Then it takes me back to the login screen. I hadn't looked at the log files yet (it was late at night, and now I'm at work) so I'll be looking later today.

Okay, a freind of mine who has been running Debian for 10+ years gave me a real good idea to use debsums to search for corrupted files on my installed packages. This will be the fastest and easiest way for me to figure out what files and packages I broke. Then I'm going to apt-get clean the local packages and apt-get --reinstall any packages in which I find corrupted files. Also in future, if either my desktop or notebook crash like that again, I will use the other computer to SSH into a terminal of the downed computer to attempt a manual shutdown (because that was something I didn't think to do when I powered it down).Comment

The "login loop" problem that you described has been the subject of previous posts on the forum. As I recall, known causes for that are:
- full filesystem
- root permissions attached to stuff in user folder
- language-pack-en package update a week or two ago
- maybe more that I can't remember
A quick thing to try would be to log in to the CLI (get there by clicking "Session>command line" on the GUI login), then (make sure you're in your user directory):
then stop the X server withCode:mv .kde .kde_old
then restart the X server withCode:sudo /etc/init.d/kdm stop
If it works, a new .kde hidden folder will be created when you log in the first time. This has been reported to fix the problem when it was caused by corrupted permissions.Code:sudo /etc/init.d/kdm start

I seen those posts, but I'm very sure this is not related - this is a case of a user that did something really dumb, then did something else very dumb. I'm not blaming the software or any packages in this case - had I been tinkering the proper way, had I used tried to SSH into the system to attempt to shut it down properly when it died, etc, I know that the file system would not have got corrupted and the system would still be working properly.
Now wait a sec - I bet that the .kde hidden folder is one of the thing's I corrupted... I'll still do the checks I mentioned, and if that doesn't get things going I'll try that fix next.Comment

I also just thought of this - since I have my backup which includes everything in my home folder, I bet if this fix works then simply restoring that folder from my DVD will set me back to where I should be. Thanks everyone, let you know how it all works out in a few hours!! :-DComment

I've had this problem as well and reinstalled my whole system. I didn't make any online updates since and i'm asking now if the online update of this language-pack-en package has been fixed and if it's safe to make a online update or if i better hold back for another couple of weeks if someone is to look into this,
any answers on that?

I think that only applies to hardy alpha not gutsy. So depending on which kubuntu flavor you are on...........online update of this language-pack-en package has been fixed and if it's safe to make a online update

) and snowhog since my 1.grade days (in Kubuntu anyway) I just did that update with the language packs and everything is hunky dory in HH world

Alright! This took all of 15 minutes - all I had to do was re-install 4 packages (ouch, but no big deal), and then restore the .iceauth file in my home directory from my DVD (it was corrupt). My system is back up and running 100% once again. Had this been Windoze - I'm more then sure I would still be slaving away :-)Comment

Okay, I canceled out the language packs and dared the update, now i'm getting: ""There was an error commiting changes. Possibly there was a problem downloading some packages or the commit would break packages."
I haven't rebooted, and I won't until someone tells me i can dare to. I need my workstation, i can't afford any downtime, Any suggestions on how i can check that my system will boot up properly?
