    Adept always crashes - SOLVED

I trying to use Kubuntu 7.10 and every time I run the Adept manager it crashes. Then I'm locked out and have to fix it with the command line. After I enter "sudo dpkg --configure -a ", I get
dpkg: parse error, in file '/var/lib/dpkg/updates/0001' near line 14 package 'perl-modules':
EOF during value of field 'conflicts' (missing final newline)
Adept still says the database is in use by another ap. I then try
    sudo apt-get clean
I get the cursor and type, sudo apt-get update, and about 2 dozen update packages show in the konsole window then an error
    Fetched 3B in ls (3B/s)
E: dpkg was interrupted, you must manually run 'dpkg --configure -a" to correct the problem. And I go in a circle. How do I get out? I trying to make a go of Linux and this is sure making it difficult.
I know you believe you understand what you think I said, but I'm not sure you realize that what you heard is not what I meant.

Instead of using 'dpkg' at the CLI, have you tried another package-installer, such as 'aptitude' or 'apt-get' ?

I may be doing this wrong but this is what I did.
I typed in the console window apt-get install synaptic and got this.

E: Could not open lock file /var/lib/dpkg/lock - open (13 Permission denied)
E: Unable to lock the administration directory (/var/lib/dpkg/), are you root?

      How do I use Aptitude?

        The command would be:
        Code:
        sudo apt-get install synaptic
Windows no longer obstructs my view.

          For Gutsy Installations:

Open Adept Manager (K Menu | System | Adept Manger) and click on Adept | Manage Repositories. On the first tab, check all items (you don't need the last item checked unless you intend to download source files for compiling). On the Third-Party Software tab uncheck/delete the cdrom repository entry. Close the window. If Adept doesn't automatically fetch updates, click on Fetch Updates. You will now have access to the thousands of available packages. If you still have problems, open a console and type:
          Code:
          sudo dpkg --configure -a
Windows no longer obstructs my view.
Using Kubuntu Linux since March 23, 2007.

I tried and this is what happens
            sudo apt-get install synaptic
            [sudo] password for ray:
E: dpkg was interrupted, you must manually run 'dpkg --configure -a' to correct the problem.
            ray@ray-laptop:~$ sudo dpkg --configure -a
dpkg: parse error, in file `/var/lib/dpkg/updates/0001' near line 14 package `perl-modules':
EOF during value of field `Conflicts' (missing final newline)
            ray@ray-laptop:~$

            Now what?

If following my previous post doesn't quite fix the problem, then:

              To fix Adept errors:

              Open a console and type:
              Code:
              sudo dpkg --configure -a
should fix it, else continue with
              Code:
              sudo apt-get clean
              Code:
              sudo apt-get update
              Code:
              sudo apt-get install
Windows no longer obstructs my view.

Well....I've checked my directories (I'm using Kubuntu 7.10).....and there's no directory called '0001' in my 'update' directory.
                  There's just ==> /var/lib/dpkg/updates/

Is it possible that a previous installation of some sort went wrong and there was a temporary directory, called '0001' was created in your 'update' directory ?

Are there any files or so in that directory ? There must be something out there, since your pc is refering to "line 14 of the perl-modules" (whatever that may be....).

Maybe you could ( first backup and then ) remove that directory or try to rename it and see what happens if you then perform the operations :

                  sudo apt-get autoclean
                  sudo apt-get clean
                  sudo apt-get update
Don't be mad if it doesn't work out....I'm only trying to help....
And first make a backup of that directory, someone never knows.....

HOLY S%$T, thank you v_override. You got me to the light at the end of the tunnel. Those files were text files. I had to get root permission to delete them, and figure out how to do that too. Tried Adept and installed a package no problem. How did you find that link? I searched for a while and found nothing. Thanks again>

Glad the community could be of any assistance to you

Since I couldn't find any "0001" directory in my "/var/lib/updates" directory, I figured the "0001" would be something of a temp directory.

So I started to search the ubuntu forum, which is very similar to this one....(at least the problems that they are having

If you want to have a look at the other Ubuntu forum, here's the link :

                      http://ubuntuforums.org/

I prefer this forum, since I'm a kde user.....a Kubuntu user

EDIT : Please mark this topic as SOLVED, by putting "SOLVED" in your title....that way, you can help out others as well
