Please do not use the CODE tag when pasting content that contains formatting (colored, bold, underline, italic, etc).
The CODE tag displays all content as plain text, including the formatting tags, making it difficult to read.
If youre looking for something really simple, i suggest Firestarter. It doesnt work very well for me and often just closes on me , dont know why.
If youre loking for something a bit more KDE-like and more functionality, you should get Guarddog. Thats what im using now and its very easy to set-up. Dont let the all the options confuse you.

KMyFirewall is also in the repos, but you can use whichever you prefer.
All of them are just graphical configurators for the built-in netfilter/iptables firewall, so you don't need to run them in the background. The rules you set with the GUIs are applied when network comes up.
There are also CLI tools to set up the firewall (iptables...and ufw in hardy), but most people are more comfortable using the GUI tools.
