    How do i make this work?

    hello i am trying to install a package from source i have the build-essential package but it wont work here is what happens in my Konsole after i use the ./configure:

    You need the xorg "dev" packages. Search in Adept for xorg and install the 'dev' packages associated with it.

    There is another command that will download and install the necessary dependencies... apt-get build-dep...

    Let me hack at this for a moment and see if it works. For now, search Adept and install the necessary 'dev' packages.

      Unfortunately I think the 'build-dep' is more for the source packages available from the repositories. I guess searching is the only method right now.

        ok i'll search for "dev" in adept and install everything i need thanks.. lets hope this works

          the only problem now is when i go to adept and search for "dev" it comes up with 10000 million things.. can anyone please help me?

            If you type in partial names adept can filter down for you. For example, type in xorg- and you'll see xorg-dev and some other files that may be of use.

              sudo apt-get build-dep packagename
              will install all the packages needed to compile the package, at least for the current version in Kubuntu. It is a good place to start, if you are trying to install a newer version that what is available in the repos

              it would help to know what you are trying to compile. It will help narrow down what you need a lot, as will reading some of the install/readme info in your source folder. Often it will tell you specifically what you need to get.

                  To reiterate this: you need the xorg development package, which is in fact called "xorg-dev"... this is a pattern that will be repeated often. When you install this and rerun configure, it'll probably spit out another name that you'll need to go hunting for. Repeat the process until it's happy. And yes, sometimes it's very cryptic as to what package you need... you get used to it
