hi, very peculiar problem. i booted up today, and the bar across the top of all windows with 'close, minimize' etc on it just isn't there. ive tried looking round on how to get it back but can't find anything. can anyone tell me what i could try to get it back up?

You've lost your "window decorations". Were you attempting to install or configure compiz, perchance? Search here or on Ubuntu forum on "window decorations" and you should find right about a bazillion posts on the topic.

ahh, you'd appear to be right. as soon as i uninstalled compiz and emerald and rebooted, the bars came back.
but when i rebooted i also got this message pop up:
Information - KdeSudo
No command arguments supplied!
Usage: Kdesudo [-u <runas.] <command>
KdeSudo will now exit...
couldn't tell a poor noob what to do about that too could ya?

Not for sure -- I suspect that error is about a "leftover" uncompleted command attempt from the prior login session. To be sure, you can reboot the system again -- I don't think you'll see it the second time (unless you "kdesu foobar" again).
