    kubuntu-restricted-extras ? What error ?

    Try in the konsole:
    Code:
    sudo apt-get install kubuntu-restricted-extras

    For mp3 ripping:

    liblame0
This package contains the dynamic libraries, which provides the encoding
    functionality of lame.
    and
    lame
This package contains the frontend encoder binary.

        Maybe this helps:

        Note
kubuntu-restricted-extras is metapackage. It only installs these packages:
        • flashplugin-nonfree
        • sun-java6-plugin
        • libxine1-ffmpeg
        • libdvdread3
        • libk3b2-mp3
        • liblame0
        • unrar
        • libtunepimp5-mp3

To encode, you probably want LAME. For the gui program to do everything, I suggest trying Grip. It's a bit clunky and not the simplest to use, but it normally works well.
I am running Ubuntu 8.10 (yes Gnome) with upgrades applied daily about 0900 UK time. Hardware is Dell Precision 420, 2x 800 MHz PIII, 512 MB RDRAM, nVidia GeForce 6800 128 MB AGP graphics, 18GB SCSI and 500GB IDE HDDs, DVD burner, Hauppage TV card.

I installed lame and it wouldn't work the other KDE ripping software but GRIP worked.

            Thanks for the help

You can also try soundKonverter. I use it and it's really great and easy to use.

Have you tried kaudiocreator? Easy to use, rips to several different formats and automatically looks up cddb info.
