    [SOLVED]installing KDE4

I have tried installing KDE4 using both Adept and Synaptic and have been unable to download the packages either way. In Adept I get the message broken package. In synaptic when I try a mark it for installation it tries to mark a bunch of packages and says that it "cannot mark all packages for installation or upgrade" and then it doesn't allow me to install even the core KDE4 package. As I stated in an earlier post I went back and found an unsupported ISO file that had 7. 10 along with an older version of KDE4. This actually installed and allowed me to use it, however, it was a very buggy version of both 7.01 and KDE4 and was sort of useless for relative newbie such as myself since I couldn't figure out how to apply all the bug fixes that needed to be applied. Anybody out there that can give me a hand on this one, it would be greatly appreciated. Also, several people have suggested that I use synaptic instead of adept. However, several times I've been trying to install multiple packages and synaptic freezes (hangs) and I have to manually restart the system. This seems like a very Windows-like behavior and doesn't seem right to me. I may be doing something wrong but this is on a very fresh install of 7.10.

    Re: installing KDE4

first of all, have you followed theKDE4 installation instructions explicitly? As in installing the package kde4-core after adding in the kde4 repository, and not any other packages. kde4-core will pull in all the needed packages, and not any of the older incompatible packages that may still be in the standard Ubuntu repositories.

As both package managers are giving you problems, trying to install the package in a terminal will give more informative information on the problem:
    Code:
    sudo apt-get install kde4-core
The error message given will pinpoint what package is causing the conflict, whether it is one you already have, or one trying to be installed.

I have seen Synaptic crash in KDE on broken packages before, where Adept simply shows the Break message.

I suspect perhaps there is a problem with the repository setup you have, or are trying to install some of the older kde4 packages still left behind. Try fetching updates, and make sure any KDE packages have '4:4.0.1' as the version,

I have enabled all the available repositories in synaptic and adept but did not see a specific one for KDE4. I will try the command line and let you know.

Thank you! Before you posted, I found the same with our friend Google. I already have a VERY stable Gutsy KDE system. Am I going to risk this stability if I install kde4-core per the instructions? I've already added the repository and updated the package cache. I've not installed any KDE 4 applications previously on my system.

The latest files I can find on that link are from 10/07 can they possibly have a stable version of KDE4? Also, where are the instructions?

                Re: installing KDE4

No, KDE4 doesn't change anything in regards to your system in regards to your existing desktop, or to the underlying OS and system libraries. It is like installing Gnome (ubuntu-desktop) or Xfce (xubuntu-desktop) alongside Kubuntu, or any combination. You will have a choice of which desktop you want to log in to from the login screen, by clicking the button on the lower-right hand corner there.

The only thing you will see are a lot of KDE4 applications in your Kmenu alongside your current items. This can be a little confusing/cumbersome at times, until you either get used to it , or edit the menu to move/delete unwanted items

                    Re: installing KDE4

I think you may be mistaking '7.10' for a date, where it is actually denoting the version of Kubuntu it is for. 7.10 is the Gutsy Gibbon., and Hardy Heron is 8.04. This is just the month and year the version of the OS was/will be released.

The directions are given on the page I linked to:
                    * Add deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/kubuntu-members-kde4/ubuntu gutsy main to your /etc/apt/sources.list
                    * Install kde4-core, note that PPAs aren't authenticated so you will likely get a warning when installing
                    * KDE 4 apps should appear in your KDE 3 K-menu or you can run a full session by selecting "KDE 4" from your login manager.
This link will show you how to add repositories to Adept easily. The directions say to add the line
                    Code:
                    deb [url]http://ppa.launchpad.net/kubuntu-members-kde4/ubuntu[/url] gutsy main
to the file called /etc/apt/sources.list. You either manually edit the file by navigating to the file, right-clicking on it and selecting "edit as root", or use the easier method of adding the line via Adept Manager as described in my link above

                      Re: installing KDE4

Okay. KDE4 (kde4-core) is installed. Restarted (Ctrl+Alt+BkSp) and logged in selecting KDE4. Nice. There are font issues within the Kubuntu Forums. Also, Adept Notifier is reporting 30 packages as upgradable or for install. Am I supposed to allow the upgrades/installs to take place? Are they only for the apps installed by kde4-core? I'm still wary of messing up my stable Gutsy KDE 3.5.8

                      Thank you.

No, the date on the latest file is October 16, 2007. Thank you though. I am able to log on to 4 now.

                          Re: installing KDE4

you should be fine. If insure, just look at the packages. Most if not all will be of the '-kde4' variety, unless you haven't updated your Gutsy system in a while.

KDE4 is completely separate from KDE3, they use a different configurations folder (~/.kde4) from KDE3 (~/kde) so nothing is changed by using one or the other. KDE4's system libraries/etc are also completely separate from KDE3's.

If you are still unsure, post some of the packages Adept wants to upgrade, the ones that you are concerned about and i'll take a lok for you

Will the command sudo apt-get upgrade -u provide me with the list of upgradable packages? The manual says that the -u option will:
Show upgraded packages; Print out a list of all packages that are to be upgraded.

I'm used to using apt-get install --simulate package to test what will happen. Will the aforementioned command just print a list without actually performing the upgrading?
