    Picasa

Hi all. Well am coming along learning the ropes here. I want to install Picasa, adept does not have anything in the repository? for Picasa? I downloaded it from Google but can not open it, that was probably a mistake. Any ideas? Thanks, all.

    Re: Picasa

picasa is not listed in the repositories for Gutsy, telling me, that it isn't a program that is designed to work in Linux and/or Kubuntu (Gutsy).

Be very careful about downloading programs from the 'net' with the expectation they will run in Linux. Use Adept Manager (K Menu | System | Adept Manager) to install packages [readrograms]. All the listed packages in Adept Manager are designed to work in your current installation of Kubuntu. With all the supported repositories enabled, there are over 20,000 packages.

      1st: Read the Snowhog's warning.

2nd: Did you download Linux package, and not Windows .exe? If not, go to http://picasa.google.com/linux/ go to 'download', select Debian/Ubuntu package (about 20 MB.) Add: if you did, but still can't install it pleasy describe what exactly you do, and what messages, if any, you see.

BTW, if you have AMD 64 Kubuntu installed, you _may_ still get Picasa, but it won't be as simple as with 32-bit kernels. And AFAIK there is no Picasa for other arches.

        Re: Picasa

Ah, good point (2nd). Yes, there are 'Linux' applications provided by, but not available through the 'normal channels', third-party vendors (Google in this case). One does still need to ensure that such applications are designed for, or will run in, the version of Linux one has installed.

        Thanks trident.

digiKam is fine, but there's no such thing as "too many photo tools", in my expirience. (If you know anything as powerful as PS/GIMP, while being as lightweight as IrfanView and having comprehensive search capabilities of digiKam/Picasa, - please recommend ) Besides, if one got used to Picasa, and doesn't mind Stallman being disappointed in him, - why he shouldn't install what he wants?

P.S. I'm not big fan of Picasa, BTW. Too big for a viewer, too weak as an editor, and search service eats resources... But I see why other people like it.

About all I do is take a few pictures, hope they come out O. K. and upload and download and will send to CVS at some point for a paper picture or a CD. Am not anywhere near up to doing editing and things of that sort for awhile. Thanks for the tip tho. I love having more software than I need. Comes from just downloading everything in sight in the past. Don't do that so much anymore.

                    Personally, I use Digikam. I evaluated Picasa, and while I think it is a good P/M, I can't stand it's /Windowsy/ look.

I can see some people are putting a [SOLVED] or *Solved* tag in their subject when the problem is solved. Why is this tag so rare?

                      How to tag:
The author of the thread, must modify the first message by manually editing the subject title.

Of course.. I don't know if the author of this thread is satisfied with the answer ;-)

I think the [SOLVED] tag in the subject title would make the forum system more efficient for helping people who need help.

To all thread authors, consider using this tag. You can always start a new thread being more specific about an unanswered question, which rarely is the same as the original subject title.
