Recommend News Reader _other than_ knode

I'm seeing some instability on my system. Among other things,
knode crashes frequently, firefox shuts down without any error
    message and X frequently crashes.

I'd like to try a news reader other than knode to see if that makes any
difference, thus eliminating knode as a possible source.

    Any recommendations?
    thanks
    Tim

If you're getting Firefox randomly crashing I doubt that's caused by KNode. Some plugins and extensions like to crash or hang firefox, notably the flash plugin in my experience. X 'frequently' crashing suggests something more insidious is going on. Are you using proprietary drivers, new or unusual graphics hardware, or programs that try to change the screen resolution?

But if you're after another newsreader, try Pan.
I am running Ubuntu 8.10 (yes Gnome) with upgrades applied daily about 0900 UK time. Hardware is Dell Precision 420, 2x 800 MHz PIII, 512 MB RDRAM, nVidia GeForce 6800 128 MB AGP graphics, 18GB SCSI and 500GB IDE HDDs, DVD burner, Hauppage TV card.

I'm not only using the flash plugin, but I'm using the windoze flash plugin,
installed thru codeweavers/crossover and a holdover from when I was using
64-bit feisty and no 64-bit flash was available, so I should correct that.

Not to my knowledge .... this just might be related to the M$ ver of flash.
