    k3b compiling trouble

Hi, I've been trying to get k3b to rip and encode dvd's. So far I have been unable to get the k3b that came with kubuntu to rip anything. When trying to rip it wouldn't go to the rip menu even though it showed the option in tools and the encode tool isn't there at all. After some investigation I found out that I need to compile k3b with the right dependencies to get it to work.

This is the first time I have tried to compile anything from source code and I have got stuck trying to work out what I need to get the ffmpeg plugin to install. When I run ./configure and check to see what's missing it says yes to everything except Resmgr support and the ffmpeg decoder plugin.

I've no idea what Resmgr is or how to install it and can't work out what I need to install for the ffmpeg headers and libraries. Also I couldn't find emovix in the repo's but it doesn't come up as missing in the ./configure output so I don't know about that one either.

This is what I have installed so far while trying to resolve the dependencies and compile the program, some were already installed, I got the basic list from the k3b site and worked the rest out from the ./configure output with a bit of hunting around the net.

    build-essential
    xorg-dev
    libjpeg62-dev
    libavahi-qt3-dev
    kdelibs4-devmake

    cdrdao
    avifile-mad-plugin
    libmad0-dev
    libdvdread-dev
    cdparanoia
    transcode
    vorbis-tools
    flac
    libflac++-dev
    vcdimager
    normalize
emovix (not in repo so havn't installed yet)
    sox
    lame
    liblame-dev
    libtagc0-dev
    libhal-dev
    libhal-storage-dev
    dbus-qt-1-dev
    libmusicbrainz4-dev
    libmpcdec-dev
    ffmpeg ?

This is the output from ./configure:

    config.status: executing depfiles commands

    K3b - version 0.4.9 or higher.

K3b - Tag guessing using MusicBrainz yes

Good - your configure finished. Start make now

It looks like I'm really close but I don't know where to go from here, If someone could point me in the right direction to the missing dependencies I would really appreciate it thanks.

    Re: k3b compiling trouble

You probably need : ffmpeg, libavutil, libavformat, libavcodec and libswscale.

I was compiling ffmpegthumbnailer and there:
    checking for FFMPEG... no
configure: error: +Could not find ffmpeg. Please update PKG_CONFIG_PATH to point at location of ffmpeg pkgconfig files directory.
    => Can't find FFMPEG, but it's installed...
    http://code.google.com/p/ffmpegthumb...es/detail?id=2

    Check is:
    configure.ac

PKG_CHECK_MODULES( FFMPEG, libavutil libavformat libavcodec libswscale, HAVE_FFMPEG=yes,

    So, after installation:
    checking for FFMPEG... yes

    And here k3b (./configure) tells:
K3b - FFMpeg decoder plugin (decodes wma and others):
    K3b - yes

      Re: k3b compiling trouble

Thanks for the advice and links, ./configure now shows ffmpeg as a yes. That only leaves Resmgr as showing no. I tried compiling with what I have so far and I now have the rip menu showing up and can choose the settings and start the rip. Only problem is it doesn't seem to do anything after that. The hard drive and dvd lights are on but nothing happens it just stays on 0%.

If I look in k3b settings/configure k3b/programs everything is ticked except eMovix and normalize. I checked normalize in adept and found a file called normalize-audio, I thought that was the right file but it was already installed. After a bit of searching on the net I found this thread with a fix for getting k3b to find normalize and it seems to have worked.

      http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=30763

I also found this post which showed how to fix the emovix bit too,

      https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+s...k3b/+bug/45026

Still no luck ripping dvd's though and I still can't see the encode option in the tools menu. here is the debug output for the rip after I cancelled it, about 10 mins in and still on 0% stuck on resizing the video:

All thats left really is the Resmgr showing no when I compiled, its the only thing showing up as no so I'm presuming thats got to be sorted out before the compile, a missing dependency of some sort. I'm not having much luck finding it, but I feel like I have got a lot closer to getting it all sorted out.

Thanks again for the help so far, I'll keep looking for the missing dependency but if anyone knows the answer I would really appreciate a kick in the right direction

There is this "k3b rip dvd not doing anything?"
        http://www.howtogeek.com/forum/topic...doing-anything

I was trying out k3b after reading this thread and I noticed there is a rip dvd function, but it doesn't seem to do anything on my computer.

Anybody know if there's a missing package i need or something?

I think that happens when the DVD you are trying to rip is encrypted. Try starting k3b from the terminal and then select the ripping option, the error message should pop-up in your terminal.
Maybe k3b with konsole tells something ?

          Re: k3b compiling trouble

To deal with encrypted DVDs (which is virtually every commercially sold one) you need libdvdcss.
Also, if you have stuff installed but ./configure says it's not there, check you have also installed any relevant "-dev" packages.
I am running Ubuntu 8.10 (yes Gnome) with upgrades applied daily about 0900 UK time. Hardware is Dell Precision 420, 2x 800 MHz PIII, 512 MB RDRAM, nVidia GeForce 6800 128 MB AGP graphics, 18GB SCSI and 500GB IDE HDDs, DVD burner, Hauppage TV card.

            Re: k3b compiling trouble

Hi, not sure what I'm doing wrong still. Several reinstalls later and I still can't get this to work. All I have done this time is install kubuntu get kaffeine to play dvd's installed firefox and setup flash/java. I will try to put down everything I tried in order in case I have missed anything.

First of all I installed libdvdread-dev then I tried,

            Code:
            sudo apt-get source --compile k3b
That then told me I needed these dependencies to compile,

            dpkg-dev
            libdvdread-dev
            kdelibs4-dev
            libflac++-dev
            libdbus-qt-1-dev
            libhal-dev
            libhal-storage-dev
            libpopt-dev
            libavformat-dev
            libavcodec-dev
            libqt3-compat-headers
            flac
            libmpcdec-dev
            libtag1-dev
            libmusicbrainz4-dev
            libmad0-dev
            debhelper
            cdbs
            chrpath
            g++

So I installed all of those and then tried it again and it started compiling. I also installed,

            sox
            transcode
            vcdimager
            emovix (downloaded the deb)
normalize-audio (I used the fix http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=30763 to get k3b to recognise it)

When it was done I used this command to install the deb that it had just made,

            Code:
            sudo dpkg -i --force-all k3b_1.0.4-2ubuntu1~gutsy1_i386.deb
After doing this k3b stops responding, when I launch it from the console I get this:

            Code:
            chris@Komputer:~$ k3b

Adept tells me that there is an upgrade for k3b after the install and if I install it k3b works again but I'm back to not being able to rip, I presume it just overwrites the install I just did with the version in the repo's

Next thing I tried was downloading the deb that you made and running it with this command,

            Code:
            sudo dpkg -i --force-all k3b_1.0.4-1_i386.deb
Now when I try to rip with k3b I have the same problem I had with my first go at compiling, I can start the rip but it doesn't get off 0%, here is the console output:

              Re: k3b compiling trouble

After doing this while I was scratching my head I noticed that the k3b deb wasn't the only deb made by my earlier attempts while using

              Code:
              sudo apt-get source --compile k3b
              There was also

              libk3b2_1.0.4-2ubuntu1~gutsy1_i386
              libk3b2-extracodecs_1.0.4-2ubuntu1~gutsy1_i386
              libk3b-dev_1.0.4-2ubuntu1~gutsy1_i386

              as well as

              k3b_1.0.4-2ubuntu1~gutsy1_i386

So I removed k3b and tried installing all of those. This time I could start the rip process but again I was stuck on 0%. Here is the output from the console:

Again adept tells me that k3b has an upgrade and also this time so do the other debs that I installed. Not much surprise when I apply the updates I seem to be back to square one. k3b works but nothing happens when I try to rip a dvd.

I seem to be going round in circles but on the bright side I have learnt a lot about compiling, debs and dependencies too. Thanks again for all the help so far I would have quit already without it and I hope this post makes more sense to you than it did to me

Edit : Also don't know what happened to the size of my posts, i thought the code quotes would have made things smaller and given the code scroll bars, sorry about that.

"quote" and "code" do that. When you have long lines/long quotes it is better to use " Additional Options" -> "Attach" text files.

I noticed that your transcode do have only one line. I think that it should have two lines. Example report.txt. You could take those transcode lines and run them as bash script, without k3b. Example go.txt.

                /1/ Kommander
visual dialog builder and executor tool
Kommander is a visual dialog building tool whose primary objective is
to create as much functionality as possible without using any scripting
                language.

More specifically, Kommander is a set of tools that allow you to create
dynamic GUI dialogs that generate, based on their state, a piece of
text. The piece of text can be a command line to a program, any piece
of code, business documents that contain a lot of repetitious or
                templated text and so on.

The resulting generated text can then be executed as a command line
program (hence the name "Kommander"), written to a file, passed to a
script for extended processing, and literally anything else you can
think of. And you aren't required to write a single line of code!
