    kmix does nothing

    Hello,
    Any sound specialists here?

Newbie question: I can't seem to find a mixer which works. This has been so since I installed ubuntu. I have a plain soundblaster and have not compiled any special drivers or anything.
The installed default mixer seems to be kmix but all it's sliders are at 0 and it just does nothing.

In the future I would to play with things like Rosegarden but for now I would be happy if I can simply adjust playback volume through software.

    Thanks, Jean.

Have you tried using the dropdown box where it says "Current mixer" and seeing if there's more than one entry?

    Also, does sound WORK?
I am running Ubuntu 8.10 (yes Gnome) with upgrades applied daily about 0900 UK time. Hardware is Dell Precision 420, 2x 800 MHz PIII, 512 MB RDRAM, nVidia GeForce 6800 128 MB AGP graphics, 18GB SCSI and 500GB IDE HDDs, DVD burner, Hauppage TV card.

      He thanks.

From current mixer I can choose between CA0106 and an usb device which is the built-in mic from the webcam. I have it set to that first one which I assume is the soundblaster.

Sound sure works else I'd be screaming hell since day 1.

Have you tried playing with ALL the sliders in KMix? It seems quite common that 'master' does absolutely nothing, and something else ends up behaving like it was the master volume.

In my case if front is not enabled, no sound will come out, no matter how i adjust master or pcm.
Make sure the mixers are enabled as well as moving the sliders from 0.

            Re: kmix does nothing

The sliders are always at zero and moving them does nothing.

Besides, the volume sliders on my players (audacious xmms) are also at 0, but the volume itself is at 100%.

I tried System Settings, Sound, Hardware, Audio device, to select ALSA in stead of autodetect but then the players refuse to play mp3's.

Try installing alsamixergui from the repos and using that.

Yes, there's a slider that finally works, thanks.

Now if only the sliders on audacious / xmms would work as they should..
