problems when either updating or adding programs to Gutsy Gibbon

you probably heard of this one before but bear with me as i couldn't seem to find my exact problem in the forum...

I recently installed (yes this would qualify me as a newbie) a copy of version 7.10 of Kubuntu.

No problems there however when I rebooted and then did my first upgrade the program that does this (apt-get/add-remove) goes through the motions of getting the files it when they're down (read transferred) it starts to install them i get about three or four files into it and then i get a commit error... a friend of mine says it's the server but when i try again it just does the same thing ... (same happens when I try to add programs too...

highly irratating ... are there any mirrors or is this due to the firewall in Linux?

    TIA David

Open Konsole and run the command:
    Code:
sudo aptitude update; sudo aptitude safe-upgrade
If all goes well, that should update your system; if it doesn't, please post any errors you encounter here.

Open Adept Manager (K Menu | System | Adept Manger) and click on Adept | Manage Repositories. On the first tab, check all items (you don't need the last item checked unless you intend to download source files for compiling). On the Third-Party Software tab uncheck/delete the cdrom repository entry. Close the window. If Adept doesn't automatically fetch updates, click on Fetch Updates. You will now have access to the thousands of available packages.
