    Re: using the repositories

    A few possibilities:

    1) The repositories were down. I've just checked and they're definitely up now, so just try again.

    2) Your internet connection is down. Try visiting other websites. If you can't get to any, check it. (And check the obvious things like have you pulled the cable out by accident etc)

    3) You have some kind of firewall that's badly borked and is blocking the outgoing connection. If apt-get doesn't work, but browsing to the site does (just click on the links in your own post), then it's (almost certainly) running on your machine.
I am running Ubuntu 8.10 (yes Gnome) with upgrades applied daily about 0900 UK time. Hardware is Dell Precision 420, 2x 800 MHz PIII, 512 MB RDRAM, nVidia GeForce 6800 128 MB AGP graphics, 18GB SCSI and 500GB IDE HDDs, DVD burner, Hauppage TV card.

        Re: using the repositories

Open Adept Manager (K Menu | System | Adept Manger) and click on Adept | Manage Repositories. On the first tab, check all items (you don't need the last item checked unless you intend to download source files for compiling). On the Third-Party Software tab uncheck/delete the cdrom repository entry. Close the window. If Adept doesn't automatically fetch updates, click on Fetch Updates. You will now have access to the thousands of available packages.

            Re: using the repositories

Well normally one uses the DNS servers provided by one's ISP (obtained by DHCP usually), and they may not work for random joe. I believe there ARE public DNS servers around, don't know any though, but try searching.

                Re: using the repositories

You could also try changing the repository mirror that you download from. In Adept click "Adept" >> "Manage Repositories" and in the first tab you can change the "Download From" setting. If you choose "Other..." you'll have multiple choices that may work better for you.

can some one paste his working source.list file?

ok guys for future references here is the solution

since i changed the connection i guess i had to refresh the index files and hence the key provided by the cd

                  i did

                  root skal-laptop #apt-cdrom add

                  it started working
