this is a weird one. just upgraded my computer to one with an amd64 chip and an sata drive. did an install of gutsy for athlon. installed many applications. then copied my old home directory (i was running gutsy before, too, so configurations should be fine, and i preserved permissions) to the new machine. did an orderly shutdown and reboot. and what came up was *gnome!*
there is nothing in .xsession-errors. running /usr/bin/startkde throws an error citing inability to find the screen, which makes no sense.
so. any idea how to get my desktop back?
many, many thanks in advance.
