    Kubuntu graphic effects?

Hi everybody. I just the fromubuntutokubuntu switch and did not install kde 4. I noticed that unlike ubuntu, kubuntu does not have any fancy desktop effect. How do I activate them? Is compiz present in this distribution?

    P.S.
Would it be completely foolish to install kde 4 and use it exclusively (i mean removing kde 3.5)?

    4. Eye candy. Open Adept Manager, and mark the following packages for installation:

    compiz-core
    compiz-fusion-plugins-extra
    compiz-fusion-plugins-main
    compiz-kde
    compiz-plugins
    compizconfig-settings-manager
    emerald

    and "Apply" to install them.

In a Konsole window, verify your glx capability with
    Code:

    glxgears

you should see a graphic of the gears and and a frames-per-second (fps) rate calculation in the Konsole window. If that looks good, hit "Esc" to close the glxgears, and enter
    Code:

    emerald --replace

to test the emerald window decorator. If that seems to work, you are ready to cross your fingers, say an incantation to the little monkey-god, and run
    Code:

    compiz

Possibly you will observe a flicker of the screen, and Ctrl-Alt right-arrow will cause your desktop to rotate or slide. That's the indication you've been looking for! You can open KMenu>Settings>Advanced Desktop Effects Settings to fine-tune the compiz display (in "General", set horizontal size to 4, then "x" "Desktop Cube" and "Rotate Cube", "Wobbly Windows", etc.). Also, the emerald theme manager is under that menu item, so if you follow instructions (and install subversion first) you can get an interesting collection of window decoration themes for Emerald to use with compiz.

    Kubuntu without KDE 3.5:

    - KDE 4 is at the moment experimental (someone might call it beta).

In the "Image Gallery" above, you can see a screenshot of Compiz running on a KDE 4 Desktop, so it is not a problem to set that up.

However, my personal experience with KDE 4 is that some things don't work. I can't get any version of Kopete to run, for example. Others have had better luck with it. Fair warning!

I've had my fair share of problems. For the most part I'll only use to test and report bugs to help make it better. I agree that it is more Beta-ish than anything else, not even a RC this could be.
