kde panel gone after upgrade (solved)

    Hi,

I just made a fresh install of kubuntu 7.10 on a laptop. After installing, everything seemed to be working fine, so I immediately did an apt-get update and apt-get upgrade which pulled in a lot of updates.

However, after rebooting and logging in to kde, there is no panel, kicker, desktop icons etc.

I have the standard kde wallpaper, and I can alt-f2 to run commands, but I need to get the panel back.

So, this is a standard kubuntu install, and I didn't make any configuration changes between installing and doing the updates.

If I alt-f2 and type kicker, a grey panel (without any icons) appears briefly at the bottom of the screen, and then disappears quickly.

I tried checking and changing the autohide options for the panel in kcontrol and this makes no difference.

I have also tried deleting the .kde directory, and re-installing kubuntu-default-settings, and neither of these work.

Anyone got any ideas? I'm trying to get this laptop up and running for my girlfriend, and a working panel and kicker are not optional!

    Thanks.

SOLVED - sudo apt-get install --reinstall kicker

thanks for coming back with the solution! I installed the 'kubuntu' version of the suse kicker, but lost my custom colors, so I uninstalled it, but then had no panel! all is well now!
