    beagle

Does anyone know why beagled stops running after about 30sec? I can keep restarting it, but it always stops running.

If you don't know the answer to that, does anyone know a free indexing program that can search MS Office documents?

Open Office reads M$ Word documents, so you can perform searches in open documents just as you would in otherwise.
Windows no longer obstructs my view.
Using Kubuntu Linux since March 23, 2007.

But I want to index several years worth of work in MS Off docs without having to convert them.

Open Office will read .doc files. You don't have to convert them.

          Not my point...
I know that OO reads doc/xls/ppt files when you use it to open them. My problem is that i want a searchable index of the contents of all those files. My understanding is that strigi doesn't index MS Office files, only OO native files. Beagle is supposed to be able to index MSO format files.

So how to get the beagle deamon (beagled) to keep running?

            Try Google Desktop.
The initial indexing may take a littie time if you allow it to index everything, though.

I've GD sends some of its indexing info back to Google. True/False?

Beagle crashed all the time on my computer too. Strigi didn't work. Now I use Recoll:

I don't have doc-documents, but it should index them, the sites says.
