    Tweaking Kubuntu busted KDE4

So I was following some tutorials to speed up Kubuntu. I did some relatively basic stuff (reduced swappiness, removed a few virtual terminals, installed preload, and ran boot processes in parallel). I also installed sysv-rc-conf, but I'm pretty sure I didn't mess with anything (I pressed r after realizing it was over my head).

After I restarted, however, instead of a much faster system, KDE4 was messing with me. It started thinking it was a desktop rather than a laptop (the icon by the clock was a desktop computer, now), my wallpaper was blank, and KNetworkManager couldn't detect any of my devices (see here). I ultimately just re-installed Kubuntu instead. I'm just wondering if anyone has any theories on how this happened? Everything was running so well, too...
