    kde4 and compiz fusion

I've been working in kde4 and I'd like to get the compiz stuff going. Does anyone have these two working together? Is it pretty stable?

Is there a separate compiz fusion for KDE4 or do I just install the ones that work in kde3?

    Is there a howto somewhere?

    Thanks
    J

KD4's KWin has built in compositing.

If you have the proper drivers for your videocard installed (if not check out this thread http://kubuntuforums.net/forums/inde...opic=3090365.0 ) then go into System Settings and then Desktop and enable "Desktop Effects" there are a number of options you can play with.

I haven't heard if Compiz Fusion works with KDE4 or not... but since the new KWin has it's own compositing it might not be an issue anyway.

    Hope it helps,
    Kev

Cool, I mainly wanted emerald though.

I could be happy however if the Crystal window decoration were ported to kde4. Or something like it. Is it possibly in a package that I haven't installed?

Doubtfully for now. kde4 is only 4 days old, give it some time to grow up. eat some fruits and have breakfast, have a few beers and start rolling.

But you can always try out compiz with kde4 and see what it does

          Fintan, I like your approach!

Seriously, YES, compiz is one of the few things that actually works on my KDE 4 desktop. Actually, it was working fine on KDE 3.5, and after I installed the KDE 4 packages the other day, compiz was not affected. It works regardless of whether I boot a KDE 3.5 session or a KDE 4 session.

Here's background on how I set up the driver and compiz for my Nvidia card:

            dible,

Maybe you could put up couple of screenies of you running Compiz in KDE4?

Sure, I'll do it tonight. I'll put a fresh screenshot up in the gallery.

                  Re: kde4 and compiz fusion

So I got this working. And my initial review is that it's pretty good but not great. Compiz acted kinda flaky at times, opening windows at the very top of the screen so that I couldnt get to thier windowbar was one thing. Flickering was bad too.

I tried the desktop kwin stuff that bongo5hh suggested. Its a bit more solid, but it seemed to slow things down too much.

I'll play with things and decide which I like better. But both are at least acceptable.

                  Cheers.

New Compiz screenie in the Gallery -- shows VMWare Player running a Win XP machine, Google Earth, your favorite Forum, all on the KDE desktop (with no panel .....)

I had installed compiz fusion under kde4(compiz-config settings manager), with emerald, it works well, but after some minutes it crashes
I am a big fan of compiz-fusion and the new effects in kde4 don't impress me too much

That's odd -- usually it either won't run at all, or else it runs pretty reliably. Are you really pushing your display system hard? If, during the short while that it runs, you could run
                        Code:
                        glxgears
it would be interesting to see how many fps it can display while compiz is running. I'm guessing you're out of gas on GPU horsepower.

I have been experimenting with the kde live cd and have to admit it's the most beautiful linux desktop i've seen. Maybe i'm easily pleased but oh me god, it's WOW and i can't wait for more kde4 applications to be available in the repo's. This maybe off the topic but can you install kde4 from the live cd or only with apt-get.

Yeah, it's pretty -- and it's also pretty buggy!

However, it will install and kinda-sorta work. Simplest method if you've got a decent internet connection is to open your Konsole and
                            Code:
                            sudo apt-get install kde4-core
and then be really patient -- it's a big package.

                              Take a look at this:

Bthw I have been using bot hardy and gutsy kde4 installs for 5 days now and am quite happy with it
