    SOLVED: Cannot install KDE4

Hello, I'm running a fresh install of Gutsy x86_64 and can't install KDE4.

I followed the directions here: http://kubuntu.org/announcements/kde-4.0.php

When I tell adept or apt-get to install kde4-core it insists that installing it will break the system. Adept tells me nothing about why it'd break so from the console I pulled up the following...

Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have
requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable
distribution that some required packages have not yet been created
or been moved out of Incoming.

Since you only requested a single operation it is extremely likely that
the package is simply not installable and a bug report against
    that package should be filed.
The following information may help to resolve the situation:

The following packages have unmet dependencies:
kde4-core: Depends: kdebase-workspace (>= 4:4.0.0) but it is not going to be installed
    E: Broken packages
For completeness I tried to install kdebase-workspace myself but that proved to also have the same results, only this time complaining about many things such as Klipper.

    Any ideas?

NOTE: after adding the repository I was told there were updates available and thus installed all available updates. Would this be part of the problem? If so, why on earth would it not retrieve the newer packages and why would there not be a warning to not update available packages on the Kubuntu instructions?
    Just a fox, a whisper.

    Re: Cannot install KDE4

I'm having the same problem as well . . . however I think it's due to some package problems on the dependency server. What I mean is that the packages on the server aren't right, so apt-get is preventing their install.

I actually successfully installed kde4 the other day, and then uninstalled it by accident last night, and went to repeat the same process I used before to install it, and it didn't work. My advice is to wait another day until the packages have been fixed.

      Try running the command
      Code:
      sudo apt-get install -f
That should fix you problem; let me know if it doesn't

Edit: Actually, if it doesn't work, try installing the packages with the command
      Code:
      sudo aptitude install kde4-core
Aptitude is similar to, but a more advanced package manager than apt-get; it should install everything you need (sometimes it does try to uninstall things, though, so double check what it wants to do before you choose "yes")

Sadly, that still doesn't work. I think its a problem in the repository.

          Re: Cannot install KDE4

I don't think there's a problem with the repo, because I installed KDE 4.0 via the repository listed in the link you provided above.

Will you please post your sources.list?

Tried the -f option on apt-get, still no dice. Tried aptitude but declined from proceeding since I wasn't 100% positive it was going to leave me with a usable system. Sorry, I'm a little sick so I figured I'd ask for a second set of eyes to take a look and see if it'd be wise to go ahead with it.

Double check and make sure you haven't tried to install any v.3.9.x software, it conflicts with v.4.0 (I just spent 3 days trying to figure out why I couldn't install Kmahjongg-kde4, only to discover I had the outdated v.3.9.x kde4games library installed).

Edit: I was also receiving a similar error to the one you're experiencing; I fixed it by uninstalling the old library, and installing the new one.

                Re: Cannot install KDE4

I'll take a look if I can tomorrow though I've got to admit the prospect of looking through every KDE package I've got to see if any are 3.9 or not is daunting to say the least. Still, I will report back and be checking this thread.

Thank you for the help thus far, I really would like to run KDE 4.

You don't have to look through all of them, just search "kde4" (there isn't an enormous amount of them); then, check only the packages that have been installed.

                    Re: Cannot install KDE4

Just as an update, I was tooling around with it and miraculously I could install kde4-core. I have no idea why, I hadn't done anything as I couldn't find any out-of-the-ordinary packages to install, just there it was.

Oh well, suppose this is solved though it'd be nice to know how.
