Can I use the LiveCD for a test drive? Or is there an AMD64 version somewhere that hasn't been listed?

Yup you can use it for a test drive, it wont' be running in 64Bit though. Also, the LiveCD is very limited, and doesn't seem to work for everyone. It might not be the best "test drive" if you want to give it an honest look.
The instructions here http://kubuntu.org/announcements/kde-4.0.php are pretty good for getting a better look at the desktop.
You can add anything you find in the repos that says version "4.0.0" but don't add the version 3.97 and the like.
