[newbie] How to remove packages and install correctly compiz fusion

    Hi!

I'm new to Kubuntu and not a Linux expert.

    My machine is :

    Asrock e-Sata2+
    AMD64 3500+
    2 Go DDR2
Asus 6600GT 256 Mo (official proprietary nvidia drivers)

    I've installed Kubuntu 7.10

I tried to install the flash plugin for Firefox. I used the adept installer, bad idea! The installation was unsuccessful.

I took a look at the adobe website and followed the instruction for the .rpm package. I thought I had to use rpm, but I was wrong. I needed alien instead. Flash works fine now, but I'd like to get rid of the things I've installed (rpm and the adept flash version)

Where can I control the packages / plugins which are on my Kubuntu? How can I remove the unused stuffs? Previously I tried Mandrake, which had a nice and user friendly control center. With Kubuntu it's fine using adept or the software menu, but not everything is listed. Do I need to use the Konsol?

I also wanted to give Compiz Fusion a try. I followed this guide: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Co...r/CompizFusion

    And then got :

    Checking for Xgl: not present.
    Starting emerald
    (emerald:8251): Wnck-WARNING **: Property _NET_WM_NAME contained invalid UTF-8
    (emerald:8251): Wnck-WARNING **: Property _NET_WM_NAME contained invalid UTF-8
    (emerald:8251): Wnck-WARNING **: Property _NET_WM_NAME contained invalid UTF-8
    (emerald:8251): Wnck-WARNING **: Property _NET_WM_NAME contained invalid UTF-8
/usr/bin/compiz.real (dbus) - Error: dbus_bus_get error: Failed to execute dbus-launch to autolaunch D-Bus session
/usr/bin/compiz.real (core) - Error: Couldn't activate plugin 'dbus'
/usr/bin/compiz.real (video) - Warn: No 8 bit GLX pixmap format, disabling YV12 image format

What are these errors? Sometimes, the upper menu of some windows disappear

    Thanks!

    Compiz installation.

    1) go to adept. type compiz. click on compiz(request install). certain related packages will be installed.

    2)also install compiz settings manager.

by now compiz related packages are over.

    3)install xgl from adept.

by now all the installations are done.

    4)reboot

5)go to console and type compiz(it activates ur compiz). For cube rotation, fire effects go to settings>advanced desktop settings.U can enable required options there.

6)to deactivate ur compiz type kwin --replace.

*note :: for third party intel chipsets and some amd chipsets we must install restricted graphic drivers in order to run compiz smoothly.
    kmenu>System Settings>advanced>restricted drivers.

When u fetch updates in adept manager all the available packages get listed.

The kmenu>add or remove programs also provides a nice interface to remove and add programs. All the softwares here are categorised.

rpm - Red Hat package manager

kleansweep - File cleaner for KDE
        File cleaner for KDE
KleanSweep allows you to reclaim disk space by finding unneeded files.
It can search for files basing on several criterias; you can seek for:
        - empty files
        - empty directories
        - backup files
        - broken symbolic links
        - broken executables (executables with missing libraries)
        - dead menu entries (.desktop files pointing to non-existing executables)
        - duplicated files
        - orphaned files -- files not found in RPM (for rpm-based distros, e.g.
Fedora Core, Suse) or DPKG (for dpkg based distros, e.g. Debian and Ubuntu)
        database
        - obsolete thumbnails (thumbnails conforming to freedesktop.org standard,
        pointing to non-existing images)

        Autoremoving unused packages
        man apt-get:
        Code:
        sudo apt-get autoremove
        autoremove
autoremove is used to remove packages that were automatically installed to satisfy dependencies for some package and that are no more needed.
        Testing autoremove:
        Code:
        sudo apt-get -s autoremove
        -s, --simulate, --just-print, --dry-run, --recon, --no-act
No action; perform a simulation of events that would occur but do not actually change the system.

                what is xgl server??

Xgl is an X server architecture designed to take advantage of modern graphics cards via their OpenGL drivers, layered on top of OpenGL via glitz. It supports hardware acceleration of all X, OpenGL and XVideo applications and graphical effects by a compositing window manager such as Compiz or Beryl. ( reference wiki)

you mean i had to install xgl?
Well - i haven't tried compiz fusion with Gutsy, but with Feisty it was either XGL or AIGLX. Both are composite managers. Ati graphic card owners had to use XGL (when using fglrx /1/).

You told that you have "Asus 6600GT 256 Mo" (Nvidia), so you can use AIGLX. No need for XGL
