This only happens on Kubuntu based installs:
Kubuntu Gutsy, Hardy Alpha2 and Mint 4.0 KDE community. On mepis it works fine.

    Any thoughts?

Is this a 'new' problem, or has it been present from the beginning? Were you previously able to open pdf documents in Gutsy? Is this a 'new' installation or an upgrade from Feisty?

This is, as far as I know about 3 days old. 4 days ago I had no problem with this issue at all. Besides Mepis 7.0 (debian etch) has no issue with it.

Do you remember what applications were updated (via Adept Notifier) within the past three days? Assuming you didn't perform any manual installations/uninstallations, I would suspect an update problem with a specific application.

Thank you for the reply .
No new app. installs. I do remember Sundays update had a lot of kde3 elements a few libs and skype but cannot recall which ones. How would I go about finding out?
