Adept Manager stopped working, but apt-get still works

Adept Manager gives me an error saying "the APT Database could not be opened!" It recommends running apt-setup and apt-get update to try and solve the problem. The attached image shows the exact error.

The strange thing is apt-get runs fine. I can still add and remove packages with anything but Adept Manager. I even used apt-get to install Synaptic, which was also able to run fine. "Add/Remove Programs", which appears to also use/be Adept also doesn't work, and gives the same error.

Where should I look to fix this problem? I also tried removing and then installing adept (using apt-get), which didn't work.

Which didn't work (hopefully the removal)?

The following packages for Adept are installed on my system:
    adept
    adept-batch
    adept-common
    adept-installer
    adept-manager
    adept-notifier
    adept-updater
    adept-notifier-common

I'm sorry. I guess I wasn't clear. Presumably, removing and installing adept did work. I didn't actually check to make sure it was gone after I removed it, but I didn't see any errors, and nothing seemed to have changed after I installed it again. However, I was doing it in an attempt to fix my problem. Since the problem was still there, that's what I meant when I said it "didn't work".

So then, is Adept Manager working (again) for you?

          Adept Manager doesn't work.
Add/Remove Programs doesn't work (seems to be Adept in different clothing).
          apt-get does work.
Synaptic does work (installed it after Adept Manager stopped working).

You don't have anything to loose by trying to install the listed adept packages using apt-get. One (or more) most likely isn't installed.

Re: Adept Manager stopped working, but apt-get still works

Ok, I went for it. It said it couldn't find adept-notifier-common, and it didn't do anything about the rest of them because they were "already at the newest version." So I removed them all. I noticed that apt-get claimed it was also removing some other packages in the process, including kubuntu-desktop. So I simply installed kubuntu-desktop back and noted what else it said it was putting back in:
              • adept
              • adept-batch
              • adept-common
              • adept-installer
              • adept-manager
              • adept-notifier
              • adept-updater
              • language-selector-qt
              • restricted-manager-kde

So they're all there, except for adept-notifier-common. I don't know what that is, but a Google search for it brings up no results, which suggests to me that maybe it's somehow unique to your system?

              Adept Manager still doesn't work.

Where is 'adept-notifier-common'? I just installed Kubuntu 7.10 x86_64 and I don't have it. Adept is definitely buggy. apt-get and Synaptic work just fine though.

see if any other apt process is running.. try closing it

                  try re-installing adept through synaptic

Adept quit working for me and Some one suggested I install synaptic. Worked for me. I was told adept has some bugs being worked out.
