Re: unable to re-install previously working jEdit editor

Again - thanks - just what I needed to know. I was crusing Google trying to find out how to delete all files in a dir using bash. It was slow going - your explicit instructions really help.

I'm not worried about doing this. I'm used to treading in dangerous waters, and watching my step. Things CAN go wrong, but I'm careful, and I already have everything really important backed up.

Thanks for staying with me this evening as I try to work this out. I'd be be a beached whale otherwise!

Hey, no problem. I LOVE this stuff! It makes my day when someone I don't even know says 'thanks man, you really helped me out!'

Each of us is helped when we are afforded the opportunity to help someone else.

Tomorrow is a holiday, and I'm going to be up for quite awhile yet. I'm here if you have questions.

OK. I carefully removed all the junk, using the console. It went fine. I was careful. I then forgot to do the clean and update thing, and installed jEdit. It didn't run. I caught my mistake, did an adept purge of jedit, and found that this time it really did get all that junk out of the file system which I had had to do by hand a few moments earlier. I then reinstalled.

It didn't make any difference. In fact, now it doesn't seem to get as far into the launch. Instead of the splash screen, with running report of the launch, I get just a blank spot in the screen where the splash should be. I take it that it's bombing off earlier. As before, I'm getting a fine collection of java instances in the running processes list.

This is most puzzling. I think my theory that the problem lies elsewhere is gaining credence, given that that other java program (Aptana Studio) had a problem immediately after jEdit died. I just don't know what to do at this point. I've already reinstalled Java, earlier.

        Any more ideas?

          Well, as you said:

So you didn't clean/update the second time either If true, how about purging again, cleaning and updating, and then reinstalling?

            Ah nuts. Caught me totally.

            OK, will redo.

I did reinstall Sun Java 6, and jEdit now loads like it did formerly - hanging partly through the launch. Don't know what all this means. Will redo the jEdit install.

Aptana still blows up like it has been all evening...

Re: unable to re-install previously working jEdit editor

Man. No good news here at all. I purged the install files using Adept's purge function, and hand checked to see that they WERE gone (they were). I did the console clean and update, then reinstall the deb package.

It still errors off right after the splash screen displays, and the java thingies just stack up again. Something's really broken, it would seem.

Since Aptana won't run right, and I have no idea how to uninstall it (and cannot find any info. about this), I downloaded Netbeans and tried to install it. The instructions said to make the two *.sh files executable, which I did. They wouldn't execute. So, no Netbeans. I was hoping to be able to test my hunch that NO java program will run at present, although I wouldn't know what that meant if it proved true.

So...still open to ideas. Looks like I'm going to miss my deadline.

I wish I had more. I feel your pain. Its probably something 'simple' (as 'difficult' problems usually are), but I'm at a loss as to what else to suggest.

Well, I've been doing this sort of crashing through the brush for years, and one thing I've learned is tomorrow brings new answers. I thank you for your considerable assistance. I've learned a lot this evening. It'll probably continue tomorrow!

(I just got Netbeans installed - ver. 5.5 out of Adept - but...as usual, it isn't telling me WHERE it is. This is simply nuts. It has to appear in the K-Menu else newbies like me are thrown to the wolves. This is NOT user friendly. I suppose the answer is obvious to almost all but me. I still think all development should be done with an idiot looking over one's shoulder, to help keep you from being utterly inscrutable.

                  Thanks again!

I'm sorry that we couldn't figure this out. For what value I was able to provide, you are welcome.
