You can just install the package mysql-server on your main machine, and play away; no need for a separate machine unless you really want to! -

The only GUI tool I've used is PHPMyAdmin (as I already had a working Apache/PHP environment set up); if you're not doing web development then my advice is to try out those packages you've mentioned, and see which you like the best.
If you're in a particularly hardcore mood, you could try and do everything from the commandline... ;-)Comment
