    Non commercial DVD play problems

    Hi All,

    I've followed instructions that I've found here to play commercial DVDs and all is working fine.

    But I've discovered that non-commercial DVDs do not play attempting to do it in the 'normal' way.

    Kaffeine (FILE->OPEN DVD):

    The source can't be read.
    Maybe you don't have enough rights for this, or source doesn't contain data (e.g: no disc in drive). (///dev/scd0) [Ok]

    No plugin found to handle this resource (dvd:///dev/scd0) [Details>>] [Ok]

    Mplayer (GUI) DVD->Open Disc):

    Failed to open dvd://1.

    VLC (FILE->OPEN DISC):

    No error, but no play.

    Alternate methods:

    The DVDs can be played anyway, but via these alternate methods:

    mplayer:

    mplayer /dev/dvd

    or

    mplayer /dev/scd0

    Kaffeine and VLC:

    FILE->OPEN DIRECTORY

    These non-commercial DVDs play perfectly under Windows with all players that I've tried.

    Any Ideas ?

    TIA.

    JB.

    Do you know how they are encoded?

      Are you sure they are DVD formats?

        No, I don't.

        But play smoothly on standalone, standard DVD players.

          As I've said in the previous message, all discs play on standard standalone DVD players.

            What applications are you referring to as "standard standalone DVD players"?

            Edit: Or, what apps do you use in Windows to play them?

              Well, at first, English is not my native language, so, maybe I'm not being accurate using certain terms.

              With "standard standalone DVD players" I refer to those devices designed to be connected directly to TVs.

              Regarding the Windows apps (as far as I can remember) VLC or Media Player Classic.

                  I'm in region 4 (Argentina) but I guess that this is not the problem.

                  I've tested the same DVDs in Ubuntu/Totem and it worked.

                  I let Totem to install 'suitable codecs' automatically and worked fine.

                    You told that:

                    => It isn't codecs problem. As Kaffeine is front end to the Xine. What do you have in the Kaffeine > xine Engine Parameters > Media > dvd.device ?
                    or
                    Mplayer > Preferences > Misc > DVD device ?

                    ==> Do backends have correct info ?

                      Please remember, standard (commercial DVDs) play fine, so, it should not be a problem about DVD device name.

                        Just in case, have you installed the ffmpeg and libdvdread packages? You may even have to install the w32codecs and/or libdvdcss packages from the Medibuntu repository; you can find instructions on how to add it to your list of repos here. It all just depends on the encoding of the DVD's.

                          Yes, I've already added medibuntu repositories and installed all those packages.

                          It's really very strange.
