    Firefox doesn't find Real Player

I have installed Real Player 10 from

    realplay-10.1.0.3725-linux-2.2-libc6-gcc32-i586.bin

but Firefox doesn't seem to know about it. There is no realplayer entry under aboutlugins and I cannot listen to a musical snippet from amazon.com.

    What to do? Thanks.

Have you installed any RealPlayer plugins?

Not that I know of. Is there a difference between Real Player and a Real Player plugin?

Yeah, Firefox needs the plugin to embed RealPlayer.
Normally, Firefox prompts you to install plugins on encountering a page with embedded media...
Unfortunately, there doesn't appear to be a plugin in the repos.

One can also avoid RealPlayer, and instead, install helix-player and mozilla-helix-player.

You can probably get it from that thread--several good ideas & solutions posted there.

That was what I needed. One of the suggestions there was to go to

              https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Re...llationMethods

which held the key. I had to go thru the declaration of the plugin to Firefox which is described there. Now why in ^&*( does Firefox sometimes find plugins with no trouble and sometimes needs manual configuration? Is this because of Firefox or because of Linux?

In any case, thanks to all!

I think its both, and maybe from the plugin istself.
these days most plugins are downloaded to usr/lib/mozilla/plugins, but sometimes its usr/lib/firefox/plugins and sometimes usr/lib/navigator/plugins or even usr/lib/netscape/plugins a leftover from when netscape was a primary browser for linux.
realplayer often times does not load its plugin to these directories though and instead creates a symbolic link from usr/lib/realplay(insert version here) to them.
I think in this case the issue might be more from realplayer though as for the longest time it relied on the usr/lib/navigator/plugins and or usr/lib/netscape/plugins directories, I know flash and java usually do a good job if you use a manual install but I am not too sure with real

The "mozilla-mplayer-plugin" package seems better on Firefox, especially if you run 64-bit.

well yes it would help on 64 bit based computers

Agree with you guys. At the same time, it's good knowledge/skill to know how to hook up the plug-in yourself, manually, which, when I did it once for sun-java JRE, amounted to locating directories/files and making the correct symbolic link. As I'm sure you guys know all too well! (Yes, I did find out that you can get the sun Java example that comes WITH the plug-in link made for you This goes back to, I think, 6.10 or such.)

I would also strongly encourage to install either "mozilla-mplayer" or "mozilla-plugin-vlc" instead. (personally prefering the mozilla plugin because of it's configurability and possibility to save the media files to local disk)

There is no where on that page that uses the term declaration, declare, etc. Could you please point out what worked for you? Thanks.
