    Re: VMware Workstation

Follow the installation instructions begining on page 37 of the Administration Guide

The specific steps you want to follow begin on page 40 of this guide. Read and re-read again before proceding. The steps work.

      Re: VMware Workstation

Actually, I wasn't sure if I needed the server or the workstation. I downloaded the workstation because I thought the server was for like the server for Kubuntu. I read some of that in the Workstation guide beforehand but, I don't know what the part about CONFIG_PARPORT_PC meant.

I also get that error right away before anything happens.

        Re: VMware Workstation

What is it that you want to do with VMware? I'm running VMware Player, as all I need to do is be able to run virtual machines while running Linux. I have VMware Player installed on both, my Feisty and Gutsy installation. In both, I'm running Win XP.

Sorry that I misread the subject and linked you to the Server Guide. The Workstation manual can be found here. Again, the installation steps begin on page 53 and the specific steps appear on page 54 (Configuring Workstation with vmware-config.pl).

          Re: VMware Workstation

I made a minimum installation disk of XP Pro, slipstreamed with all the patches as of last month. I'd like to use that disk if possible. Should I run the server or workstation? Also how do I find out information on that config_parport_pc? What is that?

            Re: VMware Workstation

Again, depends on what you want to do. If the only thing you want to accomplish is to run Win XP as a virtual machine on your Gutsy desktop, then I'd suggest you download and install the VMware Player. That's what I'm using, running a Win XP Pro virtual machine.

Can I make a VM with my disk with the player though.

No. But you can download 'pre-built' machines for use in the player. That's what I did. Works great. You can also install Qemu:
                fast processor emulator

QEMU is a fast processor emulator: currently the package supports arm, powerpc, sparc and x86 emulation. By using dynamic translation it achieves reasonable speed while being easy to port on new host CPUs. QEMU has two operating modes:

                * User mode emulation: QEMU can launch Linux processes compiled for one CPU on another CPU. * Full system emulation: QEMU emulates a full system, including a processor and various peripherals. It enables easier testing and debugging of system code. It can also be used to provide virtual hosting of several virtual PC on a single server.

As QEMU requires no host kernel patches to run, it is very safe and easy to use.
You can install qemu via Adept Manager. Qemu can be used to build the VM template file required for use by VMware.
