Cannot install new programs or update with adept. [FIXED]

Ok so have been dealing with this now for a week, have looked into it ALOT, searched and searched through kubuntu and ubuntu forums and I keep coming up with nothing.

I've been working fine with Feisty, I tried to do a clean install instead of an upgrade so downloaded the new installation cd for 7.10 and tried to install it. The first couple of CDs I downloaded were unbootable images so waited a few days and downloaded a newer version. This was bootable and in fact installed everything fine.

At the end of the installation it tries to retrieve security updates which it can't get, then when you boot into it you open up add remove programs and you get a list of the software which is installed and all the stuff which isn't installed is greyed out so you couldn't select it to install if you wanted to.

Go over to the package manager instead of add remove programs (Which I've always prefered anyway tbh) and you have a similar problem, if you tell it to fetch updates it just sits there waiting for headers, if you cancel that it tells me there is a distro upgrade to 7.10 Gutsy, why is their a distro upgrade to 7.10 gutsy when I downloaded the CD for Gutsy and it looks totally different to Feisty so I know I'm using the right one? Anyway you tell it to upgrade and it either gets stuck downloading files and just hangs or on the one occassion it downloaded everything it started installing these files and then just crapped out leaving me with a completely unuseable system.

Someone help me please because I love using ubuntu for it's simplicity of use and time saving benefits over Gentoo and right now Kubuntu isn't saving me any time. I've tried disabling IPV6 and that doesn't seem to be doing any good. I did have a very similar problem (Although not exactly the same) when I installed Ubuntu 7.10 instead of Kubuntu 7.10 but I prefer Kubuntu.

After a "new" install of Gutsy, you need to open Adept Manager and click on Adept | Manage Repositories. On the first tab check each item (you don't need to check the last item unless you desire to download source code on packages). On the second tab, uncheck or delete the CD repository item. Close. This should cause Adept to fetch updates. Close Adept Manager. Follow the instructions in my HOWTO: Add the Medibuntu Repository and PGP Key. Reopen Adept Manager and click on Fetch Updates. You'll now have access to the over 23,000 packages available for Gutsy.

Thanks for the reply snowhog, I've tried following your instructions but it won't allow me to add the medibuntu repo, I go to the console and follow your how to but it won't connect to the repo

Re: Cannot install new programs or update with adept.

I just tested the command and I had no problem. Connected just fine and pulled in the medibuntu repository, building the medibuntu.list file in /etc/apt/sources.list.d

Did you type or copy/paste the command?

typed it and then triple checked it was as you typed it in the post, keeps trying to connect but just won't. I think I've still got problems with IPV6 but I can't do anything else to turn it off and can't find any trace of it running.

Edit : Tried re-typing it again and found it was resolving medibuntu as 1.0.0.0 so pinged medibuntu and it resolved it correctly, then ran the first command again which worked fine but the pgp key command just sits there in konsole doing nothing.

Verify that you have wget installed.

Can't install it because I can't install anything, apt-get install doesn't work for anything at the moment and I can't figure out why. apt-get install wget just comes back with no packages found, doesn't tell me I already have it. It's obviously not talking to the repos. However when looking in the package manager list Wget IS installed.

apt-get install package won't work, if that is exactly the syntax you are using. apt-get requires execution by root: sudo apt-get wget

Yeah I know it needs Sudo and I do use it I just don't put it in my posts. If I didn't use Sudo it would just tell me I had to. I should note here I do know a fair bit about linux in General and this is a very very weird situation I'm coming accross.

Edit : Things have changed now, when trying to fetch updates in the package manager it doesn't hang waiting for headers anymore, it actually completes but doesn't actually retrieve any package info other than a new version is available, if I try to upgrade the version in the package manager it either tells me it cannot download the release notes or it just crashes to the KDE crash handler.

Understand. As neither of us can 'read the others mind' we can only go on what is stated, and make some assumptions. Did not intend to imply you did not know about sudo.

By the way, I've modified the instructions on my HOWTO: Add the Medibuntu Repository and PGP Key to add sudo to the wget command line istructions.

Why that command isn't working for you, I've not a clue. Site "problems" maybe? Have you checked in Adept Manager, Manage Repositories, Authentication tab to see if the Medibuntu key is/has been imported?

yeah I understand, don't mean to be off just still a little hung over and was looking forward to a brand new 7.10 install not loads of grief from it lol.

No the key hasn't been imported unfortunately, will take a look at the edited how to and come back to you.

Thanks again for the help so far.

EDIT: Ah see what you mean you've added sudo to the front of it which I'd already tried lol sorry. Didn't work I'm afraid

I'm not assuming you did not, but did you uncheck/delete the CD repository from the Manage Repositories in Adept Manager? After Gutsy is installed, you need to do this, else some problems using Adept Manager can/have been reported.

Yeah was pretty much one of the first things I did, never bothered before now with other installs but had noticed on this one that several people had reported problems and errors.

EDIT : Ok so I downloaded the pgp key to my desktop manually then imported it from the desktop into package manager, then when I hit fetch updates it does fetch a couple but not alot. I still can't find vlc in the package manager search for example.

Re: Cannot install new programs or update with adept.

Been testing the wget portion of the instructions. In a console I typed:
                            Code:
                            sudo wget -q [url]http://packages.medibuntu.org/medibuntu-key.gpg[/url] -O-
This part of the command 'prints' the gpg key file to the screen. Removing the -O- and repeating the command results in the file being downloaded. So that much of the command is working (for me). The rest of the command: | sudo apt-key add - && sudo apt-get update takes the output of the download command, pipes it directly into the apt-key add command, followed by updating Adept.

I know this works, as that's how I added the Medibuntu repository and key to my Gutsy installation.

It's ok edited my last post but must have been doing it while you were typing, I downloaded the key manually through my browser, saved it to my desktop and imported it into package manager, that part is working now and it will download a few programs and updates but nowhere near as many as you would expect.
