Re: Cannot install new programs or update with adept.

Okay. Check Adept Manger again, Manage Repositories, and ensure that you also have checked, on the Updates tab, the following items:

    Important security updates
    Recommend updates
    Unsupported updates

    And under Automatic Updates:
    Check for Updates Daily
    Only notify about available updates

Then force Adept Manager to fetch updates.

Okay, now we have to inquire: What country are you in, and so, what location are the repositories being checked from?

Have you actually looked at your /etc/apt/sources.list file to make sure 'all is well'?

I'm in NZ but have tried numerous different repos to check with including NZ, Aus, UK, US, Main server etc and nothing seems to work any different.

So, when you open Adept Manager, what are the stats reported at the bottom of the screen? For me, I show:
              1008 installed, 0 upgradable, 23318 available

Well this is my /etc/apt/sources.list file, I've changed a few things around in it a few times to try and get it working and the last thing I did was to UNcomment all the repos just to see if it would at least connect to one of them but still got nothing.

I see nothing wrong with your sources.list file. I thought I had asked, but just checked and didn't see were I did. So, are you running behind a firewall? That shouldn't matter, as you were able to run wget and pull the gpg key file down.

This is the content of my sources.list file. You can make a backup of yours, and then edit/replace your file with this. Open Adept Manager and Fetch Updates. See if it makes any difference. If not, you've lost nothing by the attempt. Just delete the file and rename the backup back to sources.list

Yeah we're running behind a firewall but I'm actually a 2nd Line Senior IT technician (Need an embarassed smilie here now) so I know the network is sound, it's definately the install.

Will try copying your /etc/apt/sources.list file accross to my own and see what I can come up with from there.

EDIT : Yeah makes no difference unfortunately. I still think it's to do with IPV6 screwing around with my network settings. I had the same problem when I installed Ubuntu 7.10 and Suse 10.3, I think they all have IPV6 enabled (Which if I were installing Gentoo I would disable while installing so wouldn't be a problem and didn't appear to be enabled in 7.04) and now I can't find any other ways of turning the damn thing off.

EDIT2 : I've just verified absolutely that IPV6 is definately off yet occassionally I'm still getting the dns resolving of 1.0.0.0 in konsole. I'm getting angry

I'm rudementally familiar with IPv6 (IPv4 ?) in that they are security protocols, correct? I ran into problems with that when I attempted to establish a network share between a Feisty laptop to a Widnoze Vista laptop using SAMBA. Could only get a one-way (Vista to Linux) share established. Documentation on the use, by Windoze, on an IPv protocol that no one else was using, was creating the problem.

But how would this be interfearing with a download action? What results do you get if you attempt an update from the command line? sudo apt-get update

The short and easy way to explain it is that IPV6 is a different type of network protocol to IPV4 except that its almost the same lol. IPV6 is a pain in the arse, most network hardware doesn't support it yet and to be honest it's just another over the top thing that isn't really needed. If you're lucky enough that your network card, router, switches and firewalls all support it then you don't really have to worry but thats pretty rare at the moment as most people are still using pretty much legacy hardware when it comes to networking. Our router is pretty new but I haven't configured it for IPV6 because I shouldn't need to. lol Anyway unfortunately it's not IPV6 I have successfully managed to turn it off as I suspected I had but in answer to your question I get the same problem I had before where trying to do a

                            sudo apt-get update

just tries to connect to the ubuntu servers and collect the updates but never gets anywhere.

It is resolving every address it needs to connect to in order to update as 1.0.0.0 and I can't get round it, earlier I managed to get round one occurrance of it by pinging ubuntu.com and it resolve it correctly but I can't get round it by pinging this time. Ping it and I get the right IP, when apt-get tries to connect to the servers I get 1.0.0.0

Not to side track this thread, but I've also read that IPV6 was created to address the ever growing need for more IP addresses. Don't know how true that is, just read it in an article somewhere.
