adept not working like it did with Feisy Fawn

when i had Feisty Fawn, adept had so many more options.
i could install VLC and Gimp with no problem.
But with Gusty Gibbon, Gimp isnt even listed in Adept,
and VLC is greyed out so i cant choose it.

What happened?

Open Adept Manager and click on Adept | Manage Repositories. On the Kubuntu Software tab, ensure that all are checked (Source Code only if you download source packages). On the Third-Party Software tab uncheck/delete the CD entry. Close and then click on Fetch Updates. You'll be pleasantly surprised at what is now available for selection in Adept Manager.

And make sure you're using Adept Manager, not its puny little brother Adept Installer. This extra level of confusion brought to you in the name of making things less confusing...

Thanks JamesM for your input. I have same problem but when I start Adept Manager the "Manage Repositories" option is greyed out as are all options when I click Adept.

I'm very new to linux.

basically your repositories are probably currently disabled and you simply need to enable them.

well JamesM is right. but unfortunately i saw his post too late.
I enabled all the repositories except source.
I un-checked the cd as a source.
wow, 22000 packages available !!!
but. then I did an update of installed packages.
adept crashed, with the error message
"no backtrace available."
And everytime i tried to install anything
[GIMP, VLC, player] adept crashes.

Im afraid of the Gibbon, i going back to the Fawn,
its a nicer animal.

But i dont wanna sound like a complainer,
I love * nix and kUbUntU is # 1 !!!

My sincere thanks to marshallbanana and arochester. After I installed Synaptic all seems to be OK with Adept now.
