/dev/dsp: Invalid argument

When I try to play a sound file using "gramofile" I always get the message
"/dev/dsp: Invalid argument".
This happens since the update to Kubuntu 7.10 on different laptops and desktops. The sound system is running without problems in all other applications I use.

Any recommendations how to get gramofile playing and recording?

I am having this same problem. Nobody seems to have an answer for it.
