installed gutsy and upgraded everything including using automatix2. Now the font in konsole is barely legible.

Solution: Don't use Automatix. It's a horrible thing.
If you're not too far into your installation, I'd suggest you just reinstall to eliminate all traces of it.
Else, uninstall Automatix and see if you can fix it in Settings > Font > Select Font (in Konsole).For external use only. -

Truthfully I never had much problem out of Automatix EXCEPT for when I've tried a distro upgrade. I traced all those problems down to Automatix. I guess it depends, but could also be a double edge sword!!
So I don't use it anymore. Gone, it is!
