Re: Laptop speakers do not mute

Now for the other issue based on that link you gave :https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Gutsy_Intel_HD_Audio_Controller

    The only option was this:

    Code:
Method F: Compile and install linux kernel 2.6.23 ...

    *does work: Vostro 1500 (STAC9205)

Download latest kernel from [WWW] kernel.org Follow instructions in [WWW] [url]http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=311158[/url]. Make sure hda-intel drivers are enabled under Device Drivers>Sound>Advanced Linux Sound Architecture>PCI Devices

Fixes: * Sound does work after suspend * Headphones do mute external speakers

Remaining problems with this method: * If headphones are present when resuming from suspend (or at boot?) internal speakers do not work. * Fix only works first time booting into the new kernel, then system reverts to previous state.
And Truthfully I wouldn't know where to begin with that. The last time I did that for a Display issue, I had to do some dancing to get the original kernel back.

Strangely, both of these are already the newest versions..however, i can't see them anywhere..even alt + space and typing kmilo doesn't bring up anything.

Exactly what i'm worried about since my XP crashed last week with the blue screen of death.and i'd be left without a clue of what to do.

Anyway, I'm still looking around for maybe something that doesn't involve a whole kernel update.

Unfortunately I haven't found a solution for you. I'll still look. Just wanted to give you and update.

i've been looking too, not too much though since i have assignment deadlines..

It's weird this problem hasn't come out in the open before, i found 2 or 3 people affected by it but not a lot.

I still haven't tried uninstalling alsa mixers and re-installing it though, since i don't know how you meant me to do that.

Re: Laptop speakers do not mute

Just got my Kubuntu original CD today! it feels nice to have an original Kubuntu CD..which is why i decided that i would design a sticker for my laptop front with the Kubuntu logo..

and that thought lead me to think about my speaker problem..it would be awkward to feel really proud about Kubuntu if a problem this basic existed..Well, tbh i haven't been looking for fixes right now because of my assignment deadlines, but i'm going to first thing after it on Monday.

Re: Laptop speakers do not mute

I'm going to throw out the following, as it happened to me last night after installing Gutsy from the LiveCD (new installation).

I have to add the acpi=off option to my kernel line (/boot/grub/menu.lst) for my Toshiba Satellite P105-S6147 to have functioning sound. I had sound when booted from the LiveCD. I had sound after installing and rebooting.

I then removed (via Adept Manager) all packages that were associated with strigi and rebooted. NO WORKING SOUND!

At least one of the library packages seems to be required (for me) to keep working sound in Gutsy. Not knowing which one, and as I had just installed Gutsy, I reinstalled, formatting both root and home partitions. After finishing, and rebooting, I had sound again.

I then uninstalled the strigi-daemon package only. Rebooted and I still had working sound.

So, if by chance you removed all packages based on an Adept Manager search of strigi, you may want to concider reinstalling strigi. Close Adept Manager. Reopen Adept Manager and remove only strigi-daemon.
Windows no longer obstructs my view.
Using Kubuntu Linux since March 23, 2007.

Wow. That's strange. I wouldn't think that uninstalling strigi would do that. I don't see the connection there. I looked at some of the dependencies, but couldn't find one that was connected to sound. Must be buried in there some where. Glad you posted that, though of uninstalling it myself, glad I didn't

Re: Laptop speakers do not mute

Yep, I just went in to System Services and set that strigi-daemon NOT to start at bootup. When Gutsy was in beta I had the experience of deleting the strigi package, only to find it reappeared in the upgrade to Gutsy RC. :P So then I got smart and simply killed the daemon and let it go at that. 8)

Re: Laptop speakers do not mute

Setting the daemon to not start at bootup would work. I opted to uninstall the strigi-daemon package based on the fact it has no dependent packages - it is a package solely unto itself. If it isn't installed, it can't be started.

I haven't removed or added anything to do with strigi.(I don't have a clue what you're talking about)

Should i still go ahead and remove strigi-daemon package and see what happens to get my headphone jack working?

I've just found something else out, i don't know if it'l'l help you any..
If i boot with the headphone jack in there, sound is redirected there and the laptop speakers mute, just that they won't start up again when i remove the jack, i have to reboot without the jack to get the speakers working.

                                How interesting...
Launchpad seems to have several bugs filed on this one issue. Perhaps one of those solutions will work for you.
