Can you verify what model? The link above gave more info. You may have already been here.
I don't know what kernel i'm booting with. How do i find out?

And, yeah the first time i'd actually added dell-m41 when it had started working..i assume this is just one of the variants and will not work on the vostro 1500, but i'll try nevertheless

Could you tell me how i could do that? i could open adept manager, type adept and then uninstall all the components it says are already installed, is that right? (sounds too easy to be)

Before we go the route of uninstall and re-install:

When you boot and GRUB appears, hit ESC. The menu given should tell you. Or easier yet, open this file. Don't open as root though. This way you'll be sure that the file remains the same. Near the bottom you'll see some uncommented entries. These are your boot options and list the Kernel. I don't think this is the problem and that you are using the most recent, I just want to make sure.

        Code:
        /boot/grub/menu.lst
That method Dibl gave is easier. Use it for the Kernel. Also, did you change that entry to "model=dell-3stack"?

Re: Laptop speakers do not mute

You can learn the version of the running kernel by opening a console window and entering
          Code:
          uname -r

            Or my preferred:
            Code:
            lsb_release -a
            The difference? uname -a shows:

            while lsb_release -a shows:

Ahhhhhh -- but there are more than one kernel versions that could be in "Ubuntu 7.04", so that output is not definitive as to the exact running kernel.

Sooooo -- I see said the blind man. 8)

Okay, so maybe running both. I've never understood how to read the results of uname -a when it comes to the version of *ubuntu you are running, not being familiar with associating the kernel version to the *ubuntu version (Ubuntu vs Kubuntu and flavor: Dapper, Edgy, Feisty, Gutsy, Hardy).

No, but i'm going to now, and reboot just to see what happens. I would also like to state that i discovered today in the library that my mute button on the laptop (there's a physical mute button) does not work and i have to reduce the volume to zero (using other physical buttons) Right-clicking on Kmix and selecting mute doesn't work too.

Re: Laptop speakers do not mute

I would also be greatful if someone could help define what this problem is..

Every time i close a Dolphin window, i get an error message like so

                    [img width=400 height=225]http://i36.photobucket.com/albums/e37/mushroomcloudwarrior/snapshot16.png[/img]
                    http://i36.photobucket.com/albums/e3...snapshot16.png

It says it will go away after the first time, but it does not..gets frustrating too, this doesn't happen on konqueror but i like using dolphin. suggestions?

Quick answer is this issue is a known bug. A search of the Forum will locate several posts on this as well as what causes it and what to do to correct it.

As far as the buttons, do you have "hotkey- setup" installed?

"kmilo" should be installed as well.
