I disagree. Add/Remove Programs contains everything the beginning user is likely to need in a very easy to use format. And adept package manager has everything else you could need, sure its not set up very application centric, but that because many of the things are not apps so much as misc packages. Plus because of dependencies you pretty much just have to install any one package containing the name of some app you want and the whole thing will be installed.
I think we just need to make the difference between adept_installer and adept_manager clearer. Perhaps something like

    Easy software installer
    Adept (advanced package manager)

And put them both in the system menu, so it's clearer they're two different things, not one thing by two names in two places. Also /usr/bin/adept should be a symlink to /usr/bin/adept_manager, just to make things more intuitive.
I am running Ubuntu 8.10 (yes Gnome) with upgrades applied daily about 0900 UK time. Hardware is Dell Precision 420, 2x 800 MHz PIII, 512 MB RDRAM, nVidia GeForce 6800 128 MB AGP graphics, 18GB SCSI and 500GB IDE HDDs, DVD burner, Hauppage TV card.

Well, I got it working with a little help from somebody else; I don't think X.org Setup is yet ready for prime time, however, but it definitely shows great potential. The "Screen" section seems to be rather unstable on my system, but that's understandable as it is still in beta form and centralized mainly around OpenSuSE (the app crashes every time I try to configure my "Screen"). It also doesn't include a "very" large assortment of Nvidia or ATI cards to choose from, but includes many others. It's a work in progress; give it a little time, and it'll be a jamming little program.

I, for one, am thrilled that it's supposed to have native NTFS read/write support. Thus far, I've had to do an incredibly inelegant hack.

Re: What is the thing u want or expect in HARDY HERON(next release)??

I'd love to see the reboot or restart <browser> messages like ubuntu does.

I'd also love to see keyboard volume buttons work, as they also work in ubuntu. Both my laptop and my G15 keyboard volume keys bring up the volume gauge but can only seem to change it from 0% to 11% and those numbers have nothing to do with the actual volume level.

Better wireless network selection configuration. Currently, its about as smart as Windows Vista's wireless connection handler. What I mean by this is, there is no preferred order list of networks I can modify to tell it which networks I consider better. For example, at my house I have 2 wireless networks, one downstairs and one upstairs. I am always upstairs, yet due to the upstairs router not having a password, it uses a whitelist, and the downstairs router using a password, vista's wireless manager always picks the downstairs router regardless of signal. I believe the ubuntu wireless manager does this as well. The kde wireless manager doesn't connect to any wireless network.

KDE seems to also cause issues with the "sleep on lid close" for laptops. Half the time, when I close the lid, it just goes to screensaver, I never had this problem with Ubuntu.

Really looking forward to when KDE4 goes stable.

I forgot one of the most important and useful.

Back/Forward buttons working in Konqueror with side mouse buttons.

This doesnt work in Kubuntu and cant be set but it works in PCLinuxOS. Dont ask me how..

Re: What is the thing u want or expect in HARDY HERON(next release)??

I love almost every single thing about Kubuntu. But there is just one thing I would like in the next release. I've mentioned it before in other places on this forum...but here goes...

              BETTER WIRELESS SUPPORT!!

If I say it louder, maybe it will happen? At least make wireless work better between two Linux machines.

Even more distressing, I recently learned that wireless works better in Ubuntu. Why would there be such a difference between Ubuntu and Kubuntu in this one area?

Other than that, I agree with everything in integ8e's list.

              Thanks,
              Matt

Re: What is the thing u want or expect in HARDY HERON(next release)??

I would add an auto install option for the 'wrappers' to run 'flash' etc on AMD64 machines - would be very helpful for newbies.

Re integr8e's list - some of it is beyond me - i'm just a plain ole computer user!!

                But I agree strongly with items 6, 9, 13, 14 and 17.

Eye candy issues don't really interest me although they are 'a nice to have' but if you want to encourage more people to experience the strengths of Linux more thought needs to go into installation, update and not losing every d*^m thing when the install goes belly up!

                Cheers.

There actually is a package in the repos called "flashplugin-nonfree" that does just that, but, it's currently broken. So, until somebody fixes the packaging (which might not happen until they release Hardy), Flash has to be installed manually using the following instructions:

                  1) Download the Flash *.tar.gz package from here.

                  2) Untar (unpack) it by opening Konqueror as root (open Konsole and run the command "kdesu konqueror"), right-clicking the package, highlighting "Extract", and choosing "Extract Here".

                  3) Open the unpacked file, and move the "libflashplayer.so" file to your "/usr/lib/firefox/plugins" directory; you can easily do this by splitting the window into 2 views by pressing Ctrl+Shift+L, clicking the right view, and typing "/usr/lib/firefox/plugins" into the address bar. Then, just drag "libflashplayer.so" from one side to the other.

                  4) Install nspluginwrapper:
                  Code:
                  sudo aptitude install nspluginwrapper
                  5) Wrap Flash into Firefox using nspluginwrapper with the command:
                  Code:
                  nspluginwrapper -i /usr/lib/firefox/plugins/libflashplayer.so
                  That should do it

You can check if your installation was successful by either going to a Flash website (such as YouTube.com) or typing aboutlugins into your address bar -> it should have an entry for "Shockwave Flash".

Re: What is the thing u want or expect in HARDY HERON(next release)??

I've read a lot of good suggestions in the last 8 pages, I'm looking forward to the next release.

As a recent migrator I had a heck of a time getting flash installed in firefox. I like the idea someone mentioned of default browser ff/opera/konqeror and java/flash.

I also really like the idea that was mentioned to save home and settings.

The one thing that has really been kicking my butt in gutsy is the digital output. In dapper I managed to get my optical>receiver working in a very short time. I've spent many hours over several days and still don't have it working in gutsy so better soundcard support out of the box would be fantastic.

Gimp/vlc would both be great to include.

I concur w/ the extra mouse button support, I keep trying to use the back button on mine and it seems to do random commands but never back.

The only thing about VLC, is that it uses a lot of system resources. It ran the CPU on my desktop (an AMD Athlon 64 4000+) up 100% several times, completely freezing it and leaving me with the only option of a hard reboot. Other than that, it has great sound
