Concur with including The Gimp by default, in ALL main projects. It's a flagship of Free Software, an image editor second only to Photoshop. A quick check shows the .deb is only 3892kB. We can surely find that much space.

I decided to remove from this installation (with Add-Remove Programs) some of the programs and extras i don't need or use, and it's surprising how much space has been freed.

... but i find that if i try to remove KTips, it will cause kde-core and kdebase to also go, and if i try to remove PrintJobs (as i don't have a printer) not only is kde-print going, but also kde-core and kdebase, and kubuntu-desktop into the bargain.
This isn't, however, the problem it may appear. kdebase, kde-core and kubuntu-desktop are (I think) all 'metapackages' - they don't install any files, they are merely a (for kdebase, large) list of dependencies designed to simplify common installations, in this case kde. They are all not installed on my system, yet I can run KDE just fine! So feel free to remove KTips and PrintJobs.

When alarm bells should ring is if removing something threatens to remove dozens to hundreds of other packages, including applications you recognise.
I am running Ubuntu 8.10 (yes Gnome) with upgrades applied daily about 0900 UK time. Hardware is Dell Precision 420, 2x 800 MHz PIII, 512 MB RDRAM, nVidia GeForce 6800 128 MB AGP graphics, 18GB SCSI and 500GB IDE HDDs, DVD burner, Hauppage TV card.

      Yet another . . .

Add a feature to the Alt. CD (or even the Live CD) that allows a user to restore the essential software/configurations to his system, should something happen to them (if that's the purpose of the "execute a shell in the installer environment" option, please correct me; I don't really what that does).

          How about AptonCD?

But i never have got it to burn a CD via K3B without errors, though.

How about.... a graphical front end and pre-install of xwinwrap so its easy to set animated backgrounds via the desktop settings options? I use Flurry all the time, would just be nice to have it perma set

kde-core and kdebase are 'metapackages' and contain only pointers to other packages. Having another package you are uninstalling, remove a metapackage does no harm to your system. If you check Adept Manager, you will probably notice, like it is in mine, that kde-core and kdebase are not marked as installed.
Windows no longer obstructs my view.

I apologise for leading this so far off-topic.

I don't for a moment doubt what you and cantab say, but i've checked and both packages are installed on this machine.... i think i'll let sleeping dogs well alone... for now.

I haven't had much luck with AptOnCd, but am currently working on getting Remastersys to run, which should work very well; my main point with the above suggestion is to provide users a method to repair their essential settings/software without having to reinstall (i.e. in case they delete their core libraries or important, essential settings in their /etc directory; many of those settings/software are included on the Alternate CD).

One more problem-Gdebi. If you installing something new and need some dependencies, it doesn't display their sizes, it just gives you names. Id like to know how much im downloading thanks.

i love linux, i love kde and i love my kubuntu.

                      this said...

there's a couple of things that don't work right now and that i'd need:
                      - hibernation
                      - switching to/from external monitor (mostly for hooking up to beamers and stuff)

there's one thing that's not reliable enough:
                      - microphones (only the integrated one seems to work...but not always...)

                      then there's networking:
networking needs lots of work (and maybe rethinking).
i have several setups for i work in several different places (including home).
                      wired vs wireless.
                      dhcp vs static.
then bridging on eth0 for my kvm machines.
i can handle all of this because i (kinda) know what to.
but i always need a terminal and an editor.
                      it's hell.
                      joe user needs better tools.

                      hth

                      ps:
                      i'm on a dell precision m65
will be for another couple of years i guess.

How about we request a pre-installed backup system capable of making an image of the entire drive (or a partition) -- something along the lines of Norton Ghost (for Windows)?... designed with ease-of-use in mind (i.e. no console).

Check out PartImage (it's in the repos). The only problem is, you cannot use it on a mounted partition (you have to use something like a Live CD, which is available).

But that still defeats the purpose of my request; in my opinion, to make things very easy on a beginner (or even the more experienced), it would be desirable to include a feature on the Alternate CD that will restore any missing configurations and essential libraries using what is on the CD. Maybe even include a feature that will scan a users system for them. Once restored, the user could reconfigure/update them as he sees fit, if at all

                            Webcam support

Multimedia codec installation like with Amarok in Kaffeine

Except for the "no console" bit, dd is exactly what you want... Bit-for-bit disk copies.
And even so, dd's syntax is very simple: "dd if=foo of=bar".
Actually, it wouldn't be hard to write a quick Qt interface for dd... I'd do it if I knew how to write Qt applications.
                              For external use only.
