Re: What is the thing u want or expect in HARDY HERON(next release)??

This may be a dumb question, but how does keeping the installation CD in the list of repos support wireless connectivity?

Your only network connection is wireless. It doesn't work. You find out you need to install a package to make it work. That package is on the CD.
I am running Ubuntu 8.10 (yes Gnome) with upgrades applied daily about 0900 UK time. Hardware is Dell Precision 420, 2x 800 MHz PIII, 512 MB RDRAM, nVidia GeForce 6800 128 MB AGP graphics, 18GB SCSI and 500GB IDE HDDs, DVD burner, Hauppage TV card.

They stopped making laptops with Ethernet ports?

Why isn't the package installed by default in a fresh installation?

Edit: And what package are you describing?

I would really enjoy being able to use an external screen or data projector as simply as say in Feisty (not to mention other OSes :-X...), with a simple combination of keys to switch the display between the default screen and the external screen/data projector. In Gutsy this doesn't work very well IMHO.

            Cheers,

If I figure it out, I'll let y'all know if I think it should be supported by Kubuntu (maybe go along with my previous #5 post).
You did note in it's Description that:
It requires OpenSuSE's hwinfo and HAL/DBus support

I did, but it seems like I read in one of the posts someone had gotten it running on *buntu (don't recall exactly where, though).

I added a wireless card to my PC and I had trouble connecting to the interweb with the ethernet port.

However, the DVD was needed when I decided to reinstall Gutsy I have since removed the card and reverted back to wired network.

Please merge the open/save dialogues. It seems that every application has its own version, some show icons and some don't. Some have a folder/file browser on the left, others have a pull down at the top.

1 ) Actually this is one thing that I definitely agree with, it should be impossible to remove such metapackages as kubuntu-desktop without some serious warnings

2 ) Interestingly enough this is actually kind of coming, the kde menu will be replaced in KDE4 with a new kind of menu. Not totally across what the differences are but the new one is supposed to be some 'non-traditional' menu. Not quite what your referring to but a definite change.

                      3) some sort of gui for xorg would be nice, actually one from editing the grub menu.lst would be good too, it could fit nicely into system settings, maybe a section on startup that covers this and the splash screen (I've seen a gui to do this before but forget where, don't really need it myself as nowadays I know what to edit in menu.lst, but for a new user it would definitely be nice)

Hmm, that really didn't go so well, I generally ended up agreeing with your points this time.

I think it would be better if the hardy heron has more options during installation:

                        For example>>

While installing hardy heron, it must ask whether to install :

                        1) Basic kubuntu (at present what we install from cd or dvd)

                        2) Kubuntu multimedia ( which installs good multimedia stuff like vlc player , mplayer with all the codecs
preinstalled and other essential multimedia stuff .Keeping a newbie in mind, this option
eliminates him to manually install codecs ,etc. )

                        3) Kubuntu (with all the essential softwares (wine,ntfs-3g) for the one who basically comes 4m a
                        windows background).

i presently hav these options in mind and even there could be more and better options which aims to provide more comfort for different type of users.

While I agree in general with the idea of more options during the install process

Re the multimedia one there are legal reasons why the codecs cannot be installed along with the os (unless licensing fees are paid).

It did ALMOST NOTHING! Metapackages can be freely removed, since they don't actually anything! They are simply a list of dependencies, to allow easy installation of a load of things. Removing a package does not remove what it depends on.

@marshallbanana, I believe there's a package called startupmanager in the repos that can handle basic GRUBbing ~[:^D

                              Why? I just did

@cantab, see what happens if you try to remove the GTK libraries. I did that once.

                              (Actually, don't; it's a VERY bad idea )

Yeah, there are a lot of bad ideas like that... Unmounting your root partition while the system is running off of it is one of them. (Yes, I did do that once... no idea how.)

I also learned that "cat foo | sed 's/bar/baz/' > foo" doesn't work--the very hard way: with /etc/passwd.
